Security feature I'd like on the M1.

I've been using the Oly Wi-Fi app on my iPhone and iPad quite a bit to operate the M-1 and something suddenly struck me. Both of the Apple devices and probably every similar device available has an unlock code even those costing a few quid.
I wonder how difficult it would be to introduce such an option on the much more valuable M-1 with its touch screen?
Theft is something I'm always concerned about and an unlock code wouldn't actually prevent it. However it would render the camera useless and so make it a less attractive proposition to the light fingered.
I appreciate that having to enter unlock codes can be inconvenient and time consuming but I'm sure something could be customized to suit.
Just a thought

Steve

Re: Security feature I'd like on the M1.

imo the downsides exceed the upsides (which don't exist so this isn't hard!)

it will have absolutely zero impact on theft - the camera will be gone before the t-leaf realises that he's stolen something without value....so no real value in that area.

downside is that Oly would have to have a support mechanism in place and enforced that would inevitably cause someone somewhere huge frustration when they lost their code!

most people lock their mobiles to protect the data rather than the hardware.

As it has Wi-Fi and GPS built in, it could 'phone home its location if a set number of attempts to unlock it were unsuccessful.

Re: Security feature I'd like on the M1.

+1 on the gps.

The other thing is that the vast majority of camera's are not stolen for the thief to use but to sell.

Several things put potential buyers off such as lack of charger, software, box, receipt (if under a year old) and documentation.
I know if I'm looking on ebay for instance those are the sort of things I expect a camera to come with, especially so in this price range.
If they are just the camera with a battery etc then I wont touch them.
Most thieves aren't going to get those items, they'll just get the camera, strap & maybe bag with a lens or two

If its registered with Olympus, and then pinched and you report it to them. They should be able to trace where it was when it next was connected to the net and "phoned home". And also turn it into a brick if you wished.

Why not make the copyright password protected and it writes the owner details all over the images if a correct pin is not entered.
