Live Composite Mode #2

Last night in prep for a forthcoming fireworks night, I decided to brush up on Live Composite mode. I pulled off this trick overlooking the M31 last April.

Reid Street, Wangaratta is all lit up for Christmas and certainly made a more interesting subject. I'm hoping to pop down to Melbourne tomorrow where there'll be unlimited LC photo ops.

47 x 1" sequential at f/9.0, ISO 200, 12mm. Thanks to Larry who I rang for advice and stayed on the blower with him for the entire shoot from 1,200 kms away. Cell phones are great!

Good one Mark. I was wondering when you were going to post this photo.

I nearly decided not to thinking it not good enough, but looking at it again I think it's okay for a beginner! Thanks again for the lend of your brain.

Re: Live Composite Mode

I am wondering what effect increasing exposure time has on the light trails - any clues?

I'm expecting you to be out on the town in Brissy very soon, burning the midnight oil shooting Live Comps!

Imagine what a short exposure would give, just a set of dots. As the exposure lengthens so will the light trails. Works well for stars as they stay in exactly the same track as they move. With the cars you can't say which bit of the road they will drive on so much more of a patch than a single light trail. You could time how long it takes a car to go past and set the overall exposure time to that (25 seconds for the car to pass = 25 X 1 second exposures) and wait for the right moment with one car???

Re: Live Composite Mode

Gee Andrew, you just did my head in … I buggered my abacus trying to keep up!
1 sec on this img looks good, so what you're saying is that 2 secs or more may have eliminated the perforated line on the left?

I just chopped a foot off the bottom.

Not if they are LED lights rather than normal bulbs as they actually flash!
I think those modes use electronic shutter, so the read time/sequence will mean LEDs will look dotty if they are moving.

Re: Live Composite Mode

Yes, that would explain the yellow dotty line on the left above the mainstream below it. I rather like that dotted line.
Sorry for the com lag, I just put my rice on the stove. Haven't had tea yet.

Re: Live Composite Mode

Nice image Mark. I've always thought Live Comp was a pretty cool feature but now realise I've never actually used it in anger. Used Live Time before but not Live Comp so must get out and give it a go as Nov 5th is getting close. Thanks for the inspiration.

Re: Live Composite Mode

Thanks Phill. Glad to have inspired you. I wish I lived in Melbourne, just as I did for many years where there are countless locations for LC mode.
I was planning to head down tomorrow (Sunday) but there's a climate change protest going on that is disrupting the city.

Nice use of the feature - I'm yet to find a reason to use it.

Like cruise control in a car, because it's there and you can.
