E-M1 locking up

I have had two E-M1 lock ups in the last 10 days. I remember this being an E-M1 issue during the early days but thought it had gone away.

I have 6 weeks left on my warranty so I'm wondering whether I should send my camera on holiday.

Is anybody else still having any lock-ups?

Both times it just froze on taking a shot, screen/EVF black and only removing the battery revived the camera.

Re: E-M1 locking up

These things are computers and we all know too well what computers are like. I wonder if it's hardware or software. It would be really helpful if the manufacturer issued a bulletin explaining the generic cause. If it's software (firmware?) it would be possible to re-load the operating system if it was possible to wind backwards and then do a further update.

Re: E-M1 locking up

Thanks Ricoh.

On both occasions I had been using the art filter mode and then switched back to A mode. I'm using silent shutter on low speed burst in A mode so I wonder if this is the issue.

I agree, more information from Olympus would be very useful!

A masterpiece of understatement - and not just about the lock-up problem!

Are you up to date on firmware? I had so many lockup problems with my original E-M1 that Oly agreed to replace it. From memory it had one hiccup the first time I used it, but behaved fine after that. (Although it scares me to write that down, feels like tempting fate ) I think several of the early firmware updates tried to address it, I don't recall seeing it mentioned recently but of course there might be more fixes included that they don't tell us about.

For what it's worth, I am up to date.

John

Re: E-M1 locking up

I would also ask, are you using FW 4.1 now?

If anything is suspect in the firmware it is more likely to show up when or after using something more complex like an Art Filter & since they are used much less with most users, they may not be noticed except by those that venture there more regularly.

I would also make sure that the Image Stabiliser system is working correctly (not pulling to one side or moving erratically etc) & make sure the SD card is not creating the condition. How often do you format it & what brand & level card do you use?

Re: E-M1 locking up

Hi both,

I just checked and I'm on firmware 4.0. So it sounds like that would be a good place to start.

Is there a way to check if the IS system is working? I tend to carry the camera by the grip at the moment rather than a neck strap.

I'm using a Sandisk Extreme SD card 60 mb/s and tend to mostly delete the images by reformatting in camera. Usually weekly but sometimes not for a month.

I did see a post on the OMD groups on Facebook last night where someone said their camera wouldn't turn on until they removed and replaced the battery. Someone else said that was "normal".

Thanks for the help. I'll try the firmware if we can. I think we might have an issue with El Capitan.

Re: E-M1 locking up

Re checking function of IS: take a shot at 1/10s and view the result on your computer.

Re: E-M1 locking up

I've had two E-M1s and although I've experienced a few hangups, in general they've been very reliable. The current one I have in particular is very good. Of course this one had been running the most recent firmware and I suspect this is actually the issue - software. I think my usage mode of the camera is now fairly static (i.e. I tend to do the same things) and this coincides with areas of the software code that are reliable.

Have you started doing new things with the camera recently? If so, that's probably the reason for the lockups. It may be a hardware problem, but I think it more likely to be software.

Re: E-M1 locking up

Transient effects due to hardware, such as the behaviour described by Mrs T, would probably be due to marginal timing errors. It's possible, but unlikely. S/W is the #1 suspect.

If the marketing people kept the requirement set nice and simple, the s/w would be too, and all would be well.

Re: E-M1 locking up

This sort of problem is always very difficult to diagnose as it can be difficult - or impossible - to reproduce under controlled conditions. It will work for ages then throw a wobbler just as your only daughter is walking up the aisle.

If you are coming to the end of the guarantee period, I'd suggest calling Oly service. You've got nothing to lose and they might have some newer information that would help.

I hope you get it sorted, it's really frustrating to have a problem like this.

Re: E-M1 locking up

This is the FW 4.1 info & I recommend updating to it.
Quote:
Firmware Update for OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA
[ E-M1 ]
[Precautions when updating firmware]

When updating the firmware from version 1.x/2.x/3.x to 4.1, the camera settings are reset.
When updating the firmware from version 4.x to 4.1, the camera settings are maintained.

Ver.4.1
(Feb.4 2016)
The stability of the image stabilizer's operations has been improved.
The problem in which the external flash would not fire when shooting in RC mode has been corrected.
With El Capitan there were issues getting the latest updater but if that is still a problem then if you have Olympus Viewer 3 installed (& I think it is a good idea anyhow), then running the software update from there it will also update the Updater program as well successfully.

Says the voice from the deep south!

I agree, the heat is getting to everyone (but thankfully much more bearable here).

Re: E-M1 locking up

Thanks everybody for all the help, tips and information.

I gave it a good test today, art filter to A-mode (low speed silent shutter burst) and some focus stacking and it behaved. My shots a 1/10s weren't that great, but I think was more me than the camera.

I have also noted battery 3 (of 4) was in use this time so will see if that turns out to be a link.

I think I'll call Olympus though, just to be on the safe side.

Re: E-M1 locking up

I have had 3 lockups since I updated to FW4.1 with about 1500 pictures taken. Lockups never happened to me before that FW update.
