Re: Geotagging

The Geo tagging process is not perfect. The GPS signal is confused by reflections from buildings etc and will give random readings. In a car satnav the device will ignore spurious readings to follow the road that it has on the map. A Geo tagging device does not have a map to determine if the random readings are valid. The smartphone app can suffer from spurious readings. It can also suffer from satellite access delay and so miss out key readings.

The biggest advantage of the smartphone app is that it corrects the inbuilt clock and calendar in the camera(s) even more useful if you are using more than one camera and want to view the images sorted by time and date regardless of the camera.

The final issue is the time to lock onto the satellite signals.

Re: Geotagging

I use GPS4CAM on my iphone and it works very very well with ANY camera. I also have a Canon 6D which has GPS built in and found this feature really useful.

Personally I find it very handy knowing the location of where I've taken a shot but if you use Apple iPhoto its even better as you can "zoom" into the location on the map, which sort of gives you another perspective to your picture etc. It is really handy for our holiday photos as we tend to do City type holidays with lots of walking / sightseeing. Otherwise its easy to forget where you've taken a picture - personally I find it invaluable but each to their own.

gps4cam is also available for Android although I am not recommending it on Android, I can only vouch that it works on iphones. It does what I want but you do have to remember to start it on your phone and keep it running.
