Out On The Streets

I had to drive my daughter to Cambridge to meet some friends today and wait around for about six hours while they went to the cinema, followed by shopping. It was no real hardship, in fact I was looking forward to some serious street shooting by myself, but the my wife spoilt it by deciding to come along so that "we" could do some Christmas shopping. Never mind, I still managed to grab a few shots, mainly from the hip.

Re: Out On The Streets

That's a great set John. It is lovely the sort of expressions you get to see as people are busy doing their thing & especially when they don't realise at all that a photograph is being taken. All very nicely taken & they work very well in black & white too.

Masterful stuff there John, "I dips me lid to yer mate" is an old Aussie saying with a Cockney undertone. No's 1, 2 and 8 are especially brilliant.

Street photography will be my focus next year. To that end I have just ordered an ZX-1 as I announced in the Lounge.

Re: Out On The Streets

As mark has already stated. masterful stuff, great images very well seen and executed.
I know Cambridge quite well I failed my first driving test there. Failure to give cyclists enough room or some such palaver.
My brother got his 1st Doctorate from Cambridge uni.
Anyway great set really enjoyed seeing them. Many thanks for sharing.

Re: Out On The Streets

Nice set John. I particulaly like the two night-time shots in the market - the contrast between the purposeful-looking activity in the first and the aimless browser with the brolly in the second of them is lovely.

Ciao ... John

Thanks Ross, the E-M5 is so small and quiet it makes an excellent stealth camera.

Cor blimey, that saying sounds very East London! the ZX-1 should make an excellent street camera, looking forward to your shots, Mark.

Thanks Jon, these days in Cambridge it's the cyclists who don't give drivers, or pedestrians, enough room! I hate driving in the city and always travel in on the Park and Ride, which is really excellent - a cheap and efficient service. I certainly wouldn't want to take my driving test in Cambridge!

The market took on a completely different atmosphere once it got dark and although it was a bit of a nuisance the rain made things even more interesting. Thank goodness for high ISO. The man with the umbrella was the ideal model; unlike most people he stood still!

I'm sure the rain was a nuisance, but it has helped the photos with those lovely reflections off shiny cobbles and pavements.

Hi John,

A great collection and well suited to B&W. Some of those people look so happy!

You're right, John, from a photographic point of view the rain was definitely a bonus!

Hehe, thanks Amanda, I think many of the people were feeling the stress of Christmas shopping. Maybe they would have smiled if they'd known that I was taking a picture!

Re: Out On The Streets

A good set, most suited to b&w. Did you use the flip-out screen for the hip shots or just roughly aim? In any case, well done!
