USB connector type?

Hi

Does anybody know the specification of the male/female USB connectors used on the OMD E-M5 Mk II and the RM-UC1 cable release?

I have a bit of a problem in that my ECG‑2 Camera Grip blocks the use of the cable release when used in portrait mode so wondered if I could buy a right angle USB adapter to fit.

Many thanks

Re: USB connector type?

I think you may have a big problem finding one.

This is a source of the plug by they sell them by the 1000.

I've made some DiY versions including Right Angle connectors by cutting up these

To be a bit pedantic, the 12-pin Olympus connector is not a USB connector - it is a proprietary to Olympus.... they just happen to have designed their "USB" cables to use that connector at the camera end. There is a tightly controlled spec for what can legitimately be called a USB cable.

That aside, the best solution I have found is to buy one of these:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Remote-Shu...-/251963206521

and chop the cable off... but I think you'll be lucky to find a right-angled version.

Re: USB connector type?

Thanks for the replies. I had feared it maybe a proprietary connector as I could not find a matching right angle cable. The closest I got was one of these:

https://www.tethertools.com/product/...pter-1ft-30cm/

Which has the wrong connectors

Looks like a design flaw in the ECG‑2 Camera Grip not leaving room for the cable release. I will have to consider going back to my Nikon for serious landscape work which is a shame as I was close to selling my Nikon and moving 100% over to my E-M5 mk II.

Maybe not so much as a design flaw but a limitation with certain options. With a compact designed body there has to be some compromises with placement of components around the camera. You could use your smart phone (or tablet) with WiFi if you want to remotely trigger it. You even get to choose the focus spot without touching the camera.

Re: USB connector type?

Another thought on using the E-M5 II with the ECG‑2 Camera Grip on when in portrait orientation is to use the touch screen shutter as there is much, much less chance of camera vibration because the touch screen is so much more sensitive than pressing the shutter button & it can also be used for MF as well (I just tried it on my E-M1, plus I have a portrait bracket attached that is similar to the ECG-2 in design on the left side).

Re: USB connector type?

The discussion on this thread suggests it's possible to fit the release with the bracket in place:

Ah, I was all excited for a minute or two.

I tried the above approach, indeed you can insert the cable release and then attach the L-bracket at just the very tips. Alas this is no use for Panos as the camera is no longer aligned with the centre of the tripod and parallax is an issue.

Ironically, the ECG‑2 Camera Grip has a plimsoll line on it to enable you to align it accurately - alas when aligned you cannot use the dpreview suggestion to connect an Oly cable release.

I found you can reverse the portrait part of the ECG‑2 Camera Grip, but this is even worse alignment than the dpreview idea.

As for using the Wireless connection to an iPad this is hopeless as it overrides the exposure bracketing settings on the camera.

The ECG‑2 Camera Grip has a fatal design flaw IMHO: not only can you not use it with a genuine Olympus cable release for accurate pano alignment you cannot even use the flip out feature of the LCD. You have to reverse it before attaching the grip as once attached you cannot move the LCD at all. At least the RRS L-bracket fixes this issue but even the RRS L-bracket fails with the Oly cable release.

Re: USB connector type?

The RRS manual has the information required to explain a solution:

Quote:
Some plates have a slot to allow lateral adjustability. Keep plate snug against camera for lowest profile, but slide plate away from side of camera to create additional clearance for tethered cables.
From the RRS reviews it appears the RRS, like the Olympus version, is a fixed centre screw not a slide plate. I have emailed RRS to confirm if their L-bracket has a slide plate design.

Re: USB connector type?

The RRS bracket looks like it frees up space for the LCD to move further, but once it is in the clamp there is no way of moving the screen.
I don't have the ECG-2 so can't check, but would swapping your tripod clamp for one of these help:

Probably not sturdy enough for big lenses though?

Re: USB connector type?

Another alternative:

Buy a plate which has a slide plate, no hand grip though, I guess it is the hand grip that forces a fixed centre screw design.

Re: USB connector type?

There are a few overseas sellers of the following bracket, but this one does state "Allows full access for battery hatch cover and all cable interface; Allows full angel for the rotating screen"

Re: USB connector type?

There are some larger Arca Swiss clamps with cutaways that might offer a solution to the cable e.g.

Re: USB connector type?

The cutaway clamp would help and would be a solution for anyone just wanting a single vertical shot from a tripod. It is not enough to get the plimsoll line dead centre on the tripod for panos.

RRS came back to me and they have a solution. They produce a CRS: Cable Relief Spacer:

http://www.reallyrightstuff.com/CRS-Cable-Relief-Spacer

Good to see RRS living up to their name

So anybody into panos may want to add one of these to their nodal rail, l-bracket, levelling base, tripod head collection

That certainly looks to be a good idea. Thanks for chasing this one up as I'm sure others may consider adding this too (although it does add extra expense to the outfit for panos). The cable clamp is a good idea at that point too.

Also look at my next post of the Kirk version.
