Mono Shots

I had a go at editing some of my photos into mono and would appreciate some CC. :-) Be kind, be harsh but be honest. All critique welcome as always looking to improve. :-)

Re: Mono Shots

The first two photos work well in mono, but not so sure about the last two. Be interesting to see all in colour to compare.

The Loch Leven pano is really superb......

Re: Mono Shots

Just to contradict myself, I think I prefer the Mono...

Colour does not really add anything, in fact those murky foam colours are a bit offputting...

But, in all fairness, the white splodgy stuff in the B&W version could be foam, water, anything. (the same with pretty much any B&W picture which 'depicts' nature) at least in the colour version you can actually see the reason why the picture was taken in the first place - the foam, whatever colour it may actually be.

Colour all the way for me when it comes to nature.

Re: Mono Shots

How are you processing your mono shots?

Showing them larger helps to evaluate them.
The horizons on 2&3 are not straight.

In lightroom and silver efex.

How can you tell they are not straight, I can't see it.

The images are on Flickr for larger viewing.

Re: Mono Shots

I've updated with the horizon corrected. I've tried to set it based on the houses in the pano and the sea on the right in the foam shot.

I am not a fan of silver efex it can be harsh

Water is always level so sloping water suggest a shot is not straight but it can be an optical illusion

I dont want to have to trail round the internet to see your shot.

Re: Mono Shots

This is in PS with a levels layer and just moving the black and white sliders in

The rest have similiar issues for me with the foam needing some local treatment to bring out the detail on the third

Alf,

I don't mind at all. That's why I posted here as I wanted some CC as it always helps to have some different opinions on an image.

Re: Mono Shots

I don't but will have a look. I'm happy with the first two images but definitely need to work on the last two.

Re: Mono Shots

I really like No 2 which is superbly composed in my view. No 1 is good too.

However, I cannot help wondering what they would look like in Velvia-like colours A bit of ND and added saturation on the sky could make No 2 in particular a winner.

Having seen the boat photograph in colour I agree that B&W was probably the best choice for your third and fourth images.

Regarding the choice of colour of B&W, I find my photographs fall into three categories:
  1. Those where colour is the obvious choice and B&W would take away valuable information or spoil the composition;

(That said, I do like to experiment sometimes. )

  2. Those where the subject or environment, such as lighting conditions, make colour more trouble than it is worth.

  3. Those with strong shapes, textures or forms that 'shout B&W', and where colour would add little or nothing.

My feeling at the moment is that No's 1 and 2 fill into the first category, and that No's 3 and 4 fall into the second category. I don't know whether your have tried selective colour reduction? If you are up for it I think that could work well for No's 3 and 4.
