Re: Panasonic 100-400

Presumably any Oly competition will be a faster lens? Pro version? So bigger and heavier then! Sigh.

There is a reference to it here:

https://www.43rumors.com/ft2-is-olym...00mm-pro-zoom/

It is only a FT2 rumour, so far from certain, and I don't think there has been any mention of it from Olympus itself.

Hi Ross ,
the good thing about the sale of the EM 1 MK III in March 2019 is that Olympus is also announcing a real top lens. Yes, unfortunately only announced. They will announce the 150 - 400 F4 - F5.6 and deliver the lens (as planned) at the end of 2019.
And as far as I have heard, the PEN F II is also coming, as it sells much better in Japan than in Europe, especially for the Japanese market. But also in Europe and US later. But I was also told that currently no EM 5 MK III will come.

Look forward to the new sensor. The megapixel specialists will be disappointed :-). Me Not

Simon
Also here he mentions it again. https://www.43rumors.com/ft5-now-99-...ent-4015384499

Good morning, all,

believe it or not, Olympus has made a trend-setting decision for the camera sector by merging its development department of medicine and imaging. They have 21 developers in the field of sensor technology. How many camera manufacturers can access on 21 senesor competence headcounts ? very few. The boys are real geniuses. They develop sensors " to get inside the body where it's always dark :-) to shoot perfect shots. And as a kind of "waste product", there is a top sensor for the EM1 MK III, so look forward to it, because there is no reason to buy an FF camera anymore. Unless you need pictures for big posters.
The only question is, who is gonne produce the sensor , TowerJazz or Sony ?

Well, the camera's gonna cost a little more. Unfortunately. But in addition to the camera, the MC-20 will be added in Q1 2019, which, in conjunction with the 150-400, is unique in the market.

The 6. axis is a "virtual" one. Olympus is still working on how to patent it. Bring a real step forward in stabilization for C-AF for photos and movies.

best regards
Simon (the real one) :-)
You can read his comments back in March too. https://www.43rumors.com/ft3-100th-a...ent-3829466212

Take no notice of that F2 post as they weren't taking Simon seriously (then) & getting incorrect rumoured details from others as Simon points out here. Simon has provided some good information for some time, but I hope he hasn't put his job at risk with him passing on as much as he has.

Re: Panasonic 100-400

Does anyone know if Panasonic have changed their policy concerning repairs or lack of same with this 100-400 lens ?

The last information I saw was that Panasonic would not repair the lens if it was out of warranty, simply offer a replacement at close to full price of a new lens. It was also widely reported that spares would not be made available to 3rd part repair companies as the lens was constructed in such a way it could only be dis-assembled at the Panasonic factory in Asia.

Re: Panasonic 100-400

broke the monkey metal mount on the lens that was out of warranty.official panasonic repair centre said maybe repairable, but no such luck £875 replacement lens ,7day wait. make sure you are insured.this is not a criticism of the lens mount material as it is better than breaking the camera, being of a sacrificial nature.the danger being the bits falling into the camera sensor etc.but an excellent lens for my needs.

Re: Panasonic 100-400

I only ask about possible issues as I spotted a Mint- example on the Ffordes of Inverness Photographic website.

I guess I am going to wait for the Olympus Pro zoom if it follows the same standard as the Pro range it should be a belter.

That's a good decision IMHO, Panasonic's policy of not repairing equipment costing 1K or more has totally put me off the brand.

It has been out a good while now 18 months at least, so I would like to think that any new stock is now issue free.

I read of some owners sending theirs back then being issued with replacements from Panasonic.

I was always put off buying one of these by the bad/mixed reports of what would be a superb lens for birding etc.
Hi Thomas,

In my household we have both the 100-400 Panasonic and the 300 m.Zuiko

The 100-400 is not mine however I have used/borrowed it at several occasions. The lens is half a year old or so hence is probably qualifies as being of "recent stock". Key takeaways:
- Very light (main reason for buying it as its owner prioritizes portability)
- IQ is very good, softens a bit at the long end.
- Lens feels well built, nice finish
- Focusing ring is smooth
- Zoom ring is a tad stiff for my liking. Not an issue, though.
- 100-400 is useful and opens for additional application areas than dedicated birding photography.
- Good price/performance
- 6 months use so far without any issues

PS lens has been used with E-M1 body, meaning that the lens OIS cannot be taken advantage of at same time as the camera IBIS.

Hope this helps

My understanding, in general, is that if the body IS is switched on the lens IS will take over.

It depends on the priority set in the camera, IBIS or OIS, Lens I.S. Priority option setting in Menu C (E-M1 Mk II).

It's not there in MK1 (software not updated).

Sorry, but it is in Menu *C for the E-M1, see page 92 (in the original manual), so why haven't you updated the firmware?
