Angry No more parts for E-m5 mk1

My mode dial has stopped working on my trusty old E-M5. I'd sent it in to the Luton Cameras 9 months ago for a faulty mode dial, and they gave it a clean & things were fine, then yesterday it stuck in M mode, it rotates but the mode doesn't change. The guy at Luton offered to dismantle it and clean it again free of charge if that's what the problem was.

BUT if needed a new part then I'm stuffed, because according to Luton Cameras, Oly have stopped supplying parts for the Mk1. Eh??? It's not that old is it? So the working life of a camera is now 3 years?? Because the Mk2 was announced in Feb 2015, so I could've bought a Mk1 then and it would now be obsolete and potentially unrepairable. Unless Oly are keeping all the parts to themselves, which is just as bad.

That's appalling.

Weren't they still selling them with a 5 year guarantee three year ago? Or was that only with the E-M1??

I thought EU rules specified that products must be supported for a minimum period? Three years is a poor show. I'd better look after mine!

It's not uncommon for Electronic gadgets to be designed as throwaway items. The manufacturer's marketing policy is to convince the punter this is the case. You want to be a 'good' photographer, then you need the latest electronic gizmo.

Re: No more parts for E-m5 mk1

I'll be giving Luton a ring tomorrow, I'll try and find out Oly's wording. I seem to recall the guys said something along the line of "No longer supply parts for"

Ime close to buying the EM1MK11 so i think the extra 99.99 to extend the warranty by 3 years is looking likely

Re: No more parts for E-m5 mk1

I hope that the guy at Luton Cameras is wrong because I hope that my EM-5 will endure for a good while yet.

If that's true and the Luton chap understood the missive from Oly correctly, it would suggest that the parts are no longer made and Oly are keeping the remaining stock to themselves, presumably to cover extended warranty repairs.

Interesting, thanks for that . Trouble is that for an undiagnosed problem you can't get an accurate quote so you're taking pot luck. What's the Oly repair guarantee period these days?
