Birds Not in Flight

Birds Not in Flight - some because they had probably not fully developed the capability yet, and all because they are turned to stone as fossils

These are some of the wonderful things on display at the Wollaton Hall in Nottingham at the moment (pictures are taken through Perspex cases for obvious reasons)

This one Microraptor has stones in its crop like many modern birds do

This one Yanornis is incredibly bird like and shows incredible feathers

This one Confuciusornis has incredibly long tail feathers for display like many modern birds

but had still dinosaur like claws

As a point of amusement I worked on the original exhibition of Chinese Dinosaurs in Cardiff in 1986 (as did Cinders also on here) and it was really fun go and see some old friends

The exhibition is still on until the end of November (end of plug) I just thought I would share some pictures to entertain

Regards
Andy

Re: Birds Not in Flight

I hope you realise that according to some US politicians they're all fake. Created to disprove creationism.

Of course, everyone knows they were created by the Magratheans when they built planet Earth for the mice.

They are just as fake as the weather warnings about the hurricane approaching Florida. Who was it - Rush Limbaugh - said they were by supermarket owners just to increase sales of bottled water. These are by pet shop owners just to increase sales of bird grit and birdseed! Honest....

Re: Birds Not in Flight

Well to be honest there are some cast (sort of fakes) in the exhibition. It makes it a lot easier to mount them for display and is the only sensible thing to do with specimens that are too fragile to transport.

We had the originals of some of the cast items in Cardiff in the 1980's and the amount of frame was a lot more than used in Nottingham

Back in my youth (long long ago ... ) I did some of that casting / painting work and I can see where the skill level has exceeded mine and where it didn't - to be honest the ones here are mainly the former.

The ones pictured above are all real. You can tell because the museum uses a standard naming where real items are numbered V.... and casts CV....

Regards
Andy
