Steam Engine

We saw the steam this morning, and made a quick detour to see this train leave Wellington railway station. It's not a common sight for us, so this was very exciting despite the rain. There were some earthquakes yesterday, so it's good there was no damage to the railway line.
1. First view:

2. More steam for the whistle:

3. A bit closer:

4. Building up steam:

5. On the move:

6. Bye:

We heard a train whistle just now - coming back from it's trip, perhaps.

Re: Steam Engine

I like #2 best, Rosemary ... it's a very good shot caught just at the right moment ... love the steam ... can almost hear and smell the locomotive.

Re: Steam Engine

They are nice shots Rosemary. I'm sorry to hear you got shaken over there. My daughter said she didn't notice it where she is now (about midway point on the North Island) although others did.

Nice. I really like shots three and six. Pity the weather and the light weren't with you. Coming from Manchester, I know a song about that.....

Re: Steam Engine

Nice work in the conditions.

The weather has caused an excess of water vapour (steam is an invisible gas) obscuring some interesting stuff.

Re: Steam Engine

Hi everyone, thanks for your friendly comments

No snow - just lots of moisture in the air, so anything not very black was over white! It was a case of get the photos then, in the rain, or not at all; the train left about 2 minutes after we stopped there.

Earthquakes were big enough to spook us but not big enough to do much damage except in Seddon, the township at the top of the South Island, right above the epicentre. My husband was driving and ended up on the opposite side of the road (he thought he's gone to sleep momentarily), fortunately no oncoming traffic!

Re: Steam Engine

Nice set of images always interesting to see steam from from around the world.
If only we could book the weather. The steam gives the shot plenty of atmosphere.

Re: Steam Engine

Nice to see these old engines still working today... have enjoyed looking and the stirring of old memories.

Not wishing to hijack the thread but for all those who love steam engines - kids at heart - you'll be pleased to know that Thomas is doing well.

Still huffing and puffing away.

Re: Steam Engine

Looks like you have "Sir Haydn" (a.k.a "Sir Handel") there, from the Talyllyn in the southern part of North Wales. Originally "No. 3 on the Corris.

Last time I checked Thomas was blue.

And this is Ivor (He's green and from Top left corner of North Wales).

Re: Steam Engine

I had a few more but for some reason or another they won't upload? Been having this bother on and off. Thomas took several attempt before he made it so decided to quit while ahead.
