OMD does airshow - RIAT 2013

I went to RIAT 2013 (Royal International Air Tattoo) recently and since swapping all my full frame for OMD kit took that kit with 3 lenses - 25, 75 & 100-300 used the primes for crowd/people shots and the 100-300 for aerial work.

AFC / tracking with the OMD does just not cut the mustard so I switched to AFS and used careful panning & framing to get the shot, all in all I am happy with the results and very pleased with the IQ delivered.

8hrs at the show, no shoulder/back ache.......what a dream!!

It's great to see someone else's perspective. You did really well to get in that close, some superb shots there especially with the blurred props. The Vulcan looks superb, we got there too late and missed it

Re: OMD does airshow - RIAT 2013

WoW ! Great set of images and some I would hang on my walls

I have to ask WHERE were you standing ?

I keep meaning to attend ... and some friends stay on top of a hill ? Getting there real early

I find your comments re OM-D and AFC/Tracking and using AFS, careful panning and framing very interesting Not least because I do wonder "how Phtoogs managed back in the days of the OM 1 ? with no AFC/Tracking ?

... was it ... SKILL ?

A superb series Ian.

The 617 sqn Tornado and the A400M + Red Arrowa stand out for me.

I've seen this set on the "other" forum and I'm pleased you have posted it here, because they are all fantastic pictures that deserve to be seen and appreciated.

Some lovely pics - what settings did you have the camera at and which day to you go?

Re: OMD does airshow - RIAT 2013

I love these shots Ian (as I've already told you else where). I hope I get the opportunity to get something like these shots here (in Oz). I'll have to check when they might have a display at our local RAAF base again.

Re: OMD does airshow - RIAT 2013

Thanks for the comments All and to answer some of the questions, I got a free ticket as my wife was working at the show (Vintage village area) so that saved me £40 The airshow is held annually at RAF Fairford in Gloucestershire so about 8 miles from where I live, it is now the largest airshow in the world!

We went on the Sunday and it was overcast to start with and then in the afternoon the sky cleared and we had sunny, blue sky, 32C just in time for the Reds and their coloured smoke!

I managed to get into an area near the seated stand as I had the special wristband on, it allowed me to get almost to the flight line and with the 100-300 I was able to get these shots.

I used the HLD-6 full grip as it gave me good balance with the 100-300 and battery life was good, only used 1 battery in 8hrs of shooting and camera on most of the day (I do not like to let it go into sleep mode as too slow to wake up so again, keep tapping shutter button in case I need a grab shot and when resting, turn off) - I made a concerted effort to be selective in my number of shots and manged to keep it down to 124 keepers out of about 200 shots for the day and then did some more serious edits for my site images, the gent next to me had a Canon D1X and Sigma 50-400 was shooting for a magazine and when we both shot the same subject, he was shooting at a rate of around 20:1 compared with me........aaah the days of pro work.

Anyone interested in seeing the rest of my RIAT images and other posts using OMD can see them on my site - link below and comments always appreciated:
http://571photography.blogspot.co.uk/

I had the camera set to shutter priority so I could control shutter speed dependant on aircraft type (could have gone slower on shot of A400 with reds but thought the reds were the primary feature so left it faster and froze the props.........!), tried AFC & focus tracking but neither worked and lost a few shots that could have been good so got annoyed & switched to AFS.

To keep subject in focus I tried to keep it central and used panning for lateral shots and kept tapping the shutter button to refocus then took the shot when placement was where I wanted it - I have read on other site that some have set one of the function buttons to do AFS and shutter for exposure/taking - as I only shoot 1 or 2 airshows a year max and most of my images are documentary type, I see not benefit in doing that for my needs.

I am pleasantly pleased with the results the Pany 100-300 gave me so it will definately be a keeper (I had thought about the Oly 75-300 but as it is a tad slower and more expensive ruled it out - I also have the 75 prime so have that length covered and do not need long focal lengths on a regular basis as I prefer primes.......legacy from my PJ days).

A great set, and interesting to hear about and see your results from the 100-300.

I am thinking that the 100-300 Pany may be the one to for when I finally decide that my EPL5 plus 50-200ZD is too cumbersome
Are people here pleased with the sharpness from the 100-300 and how does if compare in this respect to the 50-200, which is superb?
