New 510 owner...

Just acquired one for cheap, mint, with about 120 clicks on the shutter. I must say that I'm very happy with the improved detail (over my 620) and amazed that Oly produced this camera and then backed off from resolution in favor of (I guess) greater DR and higher iso? I wonder how many still use the 510 as their primary camera? Now that prices are so low it is for me nearly a perfect match for my needs (just wish they'd kept the focus-assist lamp from the E-1).

Re: New 510 owner...

I still use my E-410, bought in preference to the 510 as I don't use IS. I keep it in the car so I've always got a camera with me.

I'm contemplating something very similar (adding a 410 as well), since I'll have a bunch of BLS batteries lying around, and presumably the kit lenses, after I sell the 620.

Re: New 510 owner...

Hi
Bit late in answering I know but my opinion for what its worth from an amateur point of view is that I prefer the E 510 to the E 1 which I had as I always seemed to get a better shot with the 510, its light, simple to use and has i s, with the E 1, I was always slightly dissatisfied with the results, perhaps this was me or perhaps the camera, I can't afford to update to one of the newer Oly cameras and have built up a selection of lenses which suit the E510 well, so this will be the last camera I will buy, if it goes wrong I will look for another 510.

Re: New 510 owner...

Is always fun to enjoy a conversation about outdated gear. Both the 510 and the E-1 appeal to my vanity, in the sense that I'm thumbing my nose at fancier cameras (which in my case is a bit hypocritical, as I do sort of lust after the E-5 and the OMD). The older cameras make me work harder, I think, part of a (perhaps) misguided notion that working harder equals better photography.
I am swinging back toward the E-1 as my favorite, though, all those buttons, just love 'em!
There's a lot to be said for a camera that is cheap to own and cheap to replace. Frees up the creative spirit, maybe, by not being particularly valuable?

Plus, when you get something really nice out of it, you get extra bragging rights. As in "Look at this nice picture I took, and all I needed to take this picture was a crappy old camera I'M BETTER THAN YOU"

Re: New 510 owner...

Not sure how I missed this before. I use an E510 as my prime camera and love it. It did go wrong about 2 years ago now in that it seemed to back focus a lot with a 50-200 lens I bought. I got one of the last E620's to replace it but just didn't like the soft images although there were many other nice touches. So after much deliberation I got Oly to look at my E510 and it cost me ~70 I think to get them to fix it after which I sold the mint E620 at no real loss in price as they had since been discontinued. So still loving the E510 but like you Stuart lusting after the OMD. If only it would work flawlessly with the older 4/3 lenses I'd have succumed by now I'm sure.

Re: New 510 owner...

I sold my 620, as I've mentioned elsewhere, to get this 510. And while I don't regret it, do think the 620 is superior in all regards except sharpness. So I do miss the 620, but it was also a tad small, where the 510 is just about right. Being such a waffler, some days I think my next camera ought to be an E-30, but then the extra features of the E-5 drag me that way, then the OMD's sensor drags me over there. So I retreat back to my cave, click the E-1 on and off a few times, snap a few pics with the 510, and everything is all right.

Re: New 510 owner...

I Have recently bought a E520 and i think it will be with me for a very long time...i love it.
I like the direct access you have to all the settings instead of trawling through page after page of menu's and sub-menu's as you do in other brands of camera's.
I love the vibrant colours that olympus is well known for.

I have just bought the wife a 510 as she has decided she likes using my 520 instead of her fuji compact camera.
The only thing missing from these superb camera's is an articulated rear screen....then they would be perfect !

Re: New 510 owner...

Stuart I couldn't have put it better myself.
Phil yes an articulated screen would be great. Add in an OMD sensor & I'd buy one in an instant.

Even with "merely" the e-5 sensor and brain, an upgraded 620 would be my forever friend.

Re: New 510 owner...

The E-5 isn't that much of an upgrade over the E-620.

Have a look at dxomark scores E-620 vs E-5 vs E-M5.

The brain is obviously better, but the sensor is basically the same. Add in the fact that the E-5 is the same size a D600 full frame...

The 620 was, for me, nearly perfect, needing only a nudge toward better sharpness. The e-5 and pens got there, from what others have shown. Newer cameras (at least the ones I might be able to afford), while very fine machines, are moving away from what I want in a camera. Not that I'm complaining! Olympus' trajectory has nourished an excellent used market.

Re: New 510 owner...

I started off with an e520 and I recently bought an e510 as a second body for a wedding I was shooting.

For me, they are just about the perfect camera...I don't think there's anything I'd change, apart from their appalling low light performance, but that's something I've had to learn to live with.

Once Christmas is over and done with, I'll be looking to buy another one, just to keep as a spare!
