Usain the Nikon photographer

It was very entertaining to see Usain Bolt using a Press photographer's camera to photograph the assembled throng and everything about him on his celebration lap last night. Within an hour the camera had been identified as a Nikon D4 with a 14-24mm f2.8 lens and his photographs had been posted all over the web.

Nikon must be rubbing their hands with glee. What a pity there wasn't an OM-D handy!

I like that we (collectively everyone not Nikon, Sony, Cannon) are in a minority for SLR.

Always outnumbered, never out-gunned

Re: Usain the Nikon photographer

I have been reading a bit about what happened and you have to admire the initiative of the press photographer, Jimmy Wixtr from Sweden. Apparently he had taken some photographs of Bolt earlier in the week and asked if he could take some more after the race. He wore the same hat that he had been wearing all week, so that Usain would recognise him and called him over when he had the chance. He then offered him his camera to him to take some photographs and when he received it back again he had a memory card containing some exclusive and valuable images. I bet a lot of the other photographers were thinking "now why didn't I think of that."

That's true. The copyright for the photos is usainbolt/Aftonbladet (the paper which he was working for.) I don't think the publicity will do Mr Wixtrom any harm, though.

Re: Usain the Nikon photographer

If it is considered that Wixtrom commissioned Bolt to take the picture then Wixtrom would retain copyright or at least share it

Really??

Not sure how U. Bolt could claim ownership of data on a card he doesnt own??

Maybe the camera owner could race him for the rights to the pictures???

Re: Usain the Nikon photographer

I don't think Usain will worry about ownership of the pictures, he just enjoys the limelight. Anyway, he'll be too busy playing football for Manchester United next season to be a press photographer.

That's the copyright byline on the photos on the Daily Mail site. Perhaps Mr Bolt's and the Aftonbladet's lawyers came to a mutually beneficial agreement.
