Olympus on Social Networks

In the latest 'Olympus Views' email is the following

Follow Olympus on the Social Networks
– and get involved!

Olympus engages increasingly in the Social Networks – and you can join us! Follow us on Flickr and Facebook! Get the latest news from Olympus and participate in our communities: Exchange your experiences made with Olympus products, share your pictures with fellow members and look forward to many tips and great ideas for making better photos!

All very well and a good idea in these modern times I guess. So then linking into Flikr it's interesting to read the 'Rules' for the Olympus Flikr site

By submitting your photograph(s), video(s), photograph or video titles and/or your Flickr
username (the “Material”) to Olympus Europe – Photography Flickr Group located at
www.!ickr.com/groups/olympus-europe-photography/ (the “Group”), you acknowledge and
agree that Olympus Europa GmbH, its group companies and its successors and assigns
(“Olympus”) shall have, without any further obligation, a perpetual, royalty-free, fully paid,
worldwide, non-exclusive right and permission to copy, publish, publicly display, publicly
perform, modify and use the Material in any digital media now known or hereafter developed in
connection with Olympus´ marketing and promotion activities, in particular, but not limited to
Olympus websites, newsletters and mobile applications. Olympus ensures that any publication
will bear an author´s designation (Flickr user name). If Olympus desires to use your Material for a
purpose not covered by this license, Olympus will contact you to request your permission.

Additionally, by submitting the Material you certify that you have full right and authority
necessary to grant the foregoing rights and permissions to Olympus. Furthermore you certify
that (i) you have obtained written authorizations of any individuals depicted in the Material, or
such individuals’ parents or guardians if under 18 years of age, (ii) the Material does not infringe
or depict trademarks or design rights of a third party, (iii) the Material does not include illegal,
explicit or otherwise offensive content and (iv) the Material is created with an Olympus camera.

Now I'm not a good one for reading all the rules and regulations (which is probably why I am poverty stricken and in need of a soup kitchen), but is this the norm now-a-days with most Flikr and social networking sites? It does seem to sign away virtually all your rights apart from the limited 'bonus' of having a credit. I'd heard about newspapers trawling Flikr for images and the problems of copyright but seeing some of the conditions imposed on anyone providing good imagery to a image important company like Olympus does seem a worry to any thoughts of uploading any of my good images onto the Olympus Flikr site.

So is it just me and my poor eyesight or are there issues to worry about in these social network sites and the way big companies are using them?

If I'm out I'm JustSwanningAround

Lightbulb Re: Olympus on Social Networks

It will stop anyone, who thinks their images are worth more than a mention, from putting anything of quality onto the site. This in turn will lower the standing of Olympus as the very best pictures will not be associated with them.

We often repeat the mistakes we most enjoy...

Re: Olympus on Social Networks

Well, it's legal if you're prepared to accept it. With that wording, there doesn't seem much scope for 'other' uses that Olympus would have to come back to you on!

I'd stay away on principle, but maybe I'm just too old and picky Yes, I do read the 'small print' - sad, isn't it

I suppose my guiding principle (with apologies to the late Frankie Howerd) is 'twitter ye not'.

And can everyone agree that "you have obtained written authorizations of any individuals depicted in the Material, or such individuals’ parents or guardians if under 18 years of age"!

Chris, Thanks for posting this here ! I dont think I am an Oly FB member, but shall check !

Life never ceases to amaze me on how those with so much, have to go on taking from those with little !

To prevent searches "by those greedy ... ?*!?* " I do not index or title my shots on Flickr OR HERE ! and I only upload my 2nd or 3rd best or part thereof and, very small images !

Re: Olympus on Social Networks

It does seem a bit extreme but I think they are trying to protect themselves when using pictures globally in digital format (i.e.mainly on websites). Contacting the owner for permission to use for other purposes I would construe as meaning, for example, magazine, newspaper or billboard advertizing, but it is ambiguous and open to many interpretations!

"A hundredth of a second here, a hundredth of a second there — even if you put them end to end, they still only add up to one, two, perhaps three seconds, snatched from eternity." ~ Robert Doisneau
