I love saving money, and this did the job well:

That was a while back. new LED panels are much brighter and can be balanced to something like "daylight"

The Metz unit is a "Twin Flash" rather than a ring flash, so you may not get the results you are looking for.

I use a Sunpak 16 R which is similar to the Olympus Ring Flash, but a bit more versatile. They do come up on eBay from time to time at about the 150 to 200 mark: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Sunpak-AUT...EAAOSw0vBUdJdz

I can't say I've noticed any effect attributable to the twin flash tubes. I use it with the diffuser clipped onto the front.

This one seems good, but I wonder if a purchaser would get 'hammered' by UK customs. Having been bitten once, I'm hesitant in buying relatively high value items from the far East, though I buy many low value items.

That's good to know.

"Hammered" is right. I'd certainly watch out for that, having got caught out on an import from the US.

I got my one from the EU, so no problem.

I love the idea of making my own gear and am going to look into cobbling together another LED ring-light.Meanwhile if I need to use the camera flash- I use it with a white plastic film canister diy diffuser .

Doing it again, I'd got for something like these:

I too have an old film canister cut to fit the popup flash on my old E-500

I interpret that as not high magnification, to which my comment applied.
