February 40 mpx announcement?

The new 40 mpx E-M5II is apparently to be announced next month.
http://www.dailycameranews.com/2015/...-announcement/

It looks as if many of the E-M1's design features will also be adopted for this new Oly.

Re: February 40 mpx announcement?

Is this anything for existing users to get excited about or is it just a minor update to make it a little more attractive to potential buyers?

I guess the key to this will be how effective the new 40mp sensor shift technology is. I'm expecting that it won't work very well with any subject that contains movement, from sports to landscapes on a breezy day. I've also seen a rumour that Olympus state it is only suitable when used on a tripod, which will limit it further for many users. Also, from a personal point of view, I don't want 40mp files when my hard drive is already bursting.

There are other improvements, such as better button layout and fully articulating LCD, but are these enough to tempt existing OMD owners to upgrade?

Re: February 40 mpx announcement?

I must admit the two things which look to be worthy changes are the larger control wheels (according to the pics) and the articulating screen. And I'm a little dubious as to the worth of sensor-shift technology, probably because I don't fully understand the benefits of it.

But Olympus, like all other manufacturers, has to be seen to be moving forward.

Re: February 40 mpx announcement?

Just because we hard-core nutters don't see the benefits doesn't mean it's not a good thing. Just because it's new doesn't mean it is.

It's good to see that Oly are still pushing out innovative stuff, and if it brings more users in then that's more R&D income for the stuff that might excite us old farts. I'll be interested to what it does and how well, but am not waiting for this one in any particular state of high excitement.

Ciao ... John

Re: February 40 mpx announcement?

From what we know the E-M5 MkII looks like a reasonable improvement over the MkI. Is it worth upgrading - not for me. What I would really like is a firmware upgrade so that one of the function buttons (FN1, FN2, record, LFN-1) can be used as a toggle to replicate the function of the 1-2 lever and let my 2 dials control 4 things (aperture, shutter, ISO, and exposure compensation [especially when manual+auto iso]) but I'm not going to fork out the money on a new camera just for this.

Re: February 40 mpx announcement?

I know we have only seen rumors at the mo and I must admit to have missed the fully articulated screen on them.
It's one thing I've held on to my E5 for, been using it this morning.
I won't be in the market for the E-M5 mk2 but if in a year or so there's an E-M1 mk2 with a fully movable screen then who knows.

Re: February 40 mpx announcement?

The EM5 is a classic looking camera and I'm glad it's being kept alive.
Proof of sensor shift technology wil be in the eating, as it were, need to see example shots taken in the scenarios John mentioned.
I think Olympus may have missed a trick by not including an electronic shutter as an option.

This is almost as big an upgrade is as the E-M1 was. The only things the Mk2 lacks compared to the E-M1 is the bigger grip, PDAF and better weather sealing!
Remember the E-M5 came out 3 years ago before the E-P5 , E-M1 and E-M10

And before all these features, that my E-M5 still lacks:
  • Focus peaking. (Got manual lenses. Don't get the E-M5 Mk1!)
  • More Focus areas (81)
  • Wifi. Remote control. Remote Viewfinder. Jpeg Transfer.
  • Live Composite Mode. (Do you do night time long exposures?)
  • Good dial and button positions. (E-M5 has those fiddly little buttons and no 2x2 Dials.)
  • Direct access to HDR and Bracketing. (14 menu clicks on the E-M5!)
  • Electronic first curtain 'anti-shock'.
  • MySets on the Dial.
  • Higher Resolution rear screen
  • Shoot stills during video filming.
  • Time lapse. As well as Time lapse output as Video
  • CA Correction in JPEG.
On top of all that, it adds:
  • Smaller height (no accessory port)
  • Better IQ
  • Better IBIS
  • Flexible tilting screen
  • 40Mp mode
I don't need all of these. But just to have my top 5 of those is a no brainer!

It's encouraging to hear that the specs we think it will have (bearing in mind that at present it is just rumors) definitely appeal to you for an upgrade.

Re: February 40 mpx announcement?

I'm treating them as facts!
And the most important items have been available on other OM-Ds for a long time. Us poor E-M5 owners are still in the dark ages. With our cracked bezels and fly-away eye cups.

I'm going to rush out and buy one and swank around taking 40mp pictures of everything. Hand held!

I'm already there! I can hardly remember how we used to get by with just 16 mega pixels. You may laugh! But we used to think that was a lot back then.

It's only later that I'll start moaning about how poor the focus peaking is (never seen it yet) and why there is still no custom SCP. And how annoying that twisty screen is. And why don't people keep still when I'm taking 8 pictures of them in 40mp mode.

Maybe not missed, just not all specs are known yet & it may likely have zero second Anti-Shock setting that helps in those circumstances.

Re: February 40 mpx announcement?

40 MP would give better gradation of tones.
I want thew swivel screen.
Hope the next EM-1 has those two improvements.

I spoke to Oly European Customer Support requesting a f/w upgrade to provide the addition of another mode to the functions of the 1-2 lever on the E-M1 which would provide for aperture, shutter, ISO, and exposure compensation particularly when using manual + auto-ISO. At their request I sent them an email so that they could forward the proposal to the development team in Japan. Who knows, sometime in the future this might just happen.

I suggest you forward your requirement to Oly Support - the more user pressure there is the more likely they are to respond.

By the way, if you've looked at the E-M5 MkII images on a well known rumours site, you will see that this new version inherits the 1-2 lever as used on the E-M1.

Re: February 40 mpx announcement?

It looks like a nice camera, but projected pricing is £900 body only. I reckon that's at least £200 above where it needs to be - either for upgraders or to attract new users to the u43 fold.

Thats what made me think of a way of doing it on my MK1 with just a firmware upgrade. A sort of thank you to all the E-M5 customers who had a large part in bringing Olympus out of the doldrums.
