Along the canal with a ZD 300 f/2.8

First posted on the e-group's sibling site, DPNow.com, and all taken using an E-30 and ZD 300 f/2.8

My personal challenge to catch some waterfowl coming in to land on the Grand Union canal that flows past our office here in Apsley has not been blessed with, well, any flying waterfowl, so far, but here are some less spectacular images from the canal instead - all taken with a lens equivalent to a 600mm f/2.8 (and all hand-held!):

Never noticed those before...

All dressed-up.

Juvenile swan (still with a grey beak) dribbling.

Moorhen.

Another swan strutting its stuff.

These two were keeping each other company - an oddball couple.

These two were on the far side of the canal, but not too far for a 600mm lens!

A welcome change to the very common Canada geese, a Greylag goose.

Greylag goose on the march!

Another close up of the Greylag.

Feeding time on the towpath!

Greylag scratching.

Now how do I get this lot to fly?

Ian

Your Canada and Greylag may have had something in mind! This is a hybrid of the two species.

That lens looks a real cracker! But at least us mere mortals have the chance to hire one rather than have to shell out the five grand or whatever it costs

Ian, didn't see any information on the images. By the look of the DOF, you had the f-stop low. What F-stop did you find worked best for hand held and how hard is it to hold the lens steady (assuming it must be fairly heavy). The photo's look very sharp, with the background very velvety.

You can see the exif data but the gallery conrols are slightly different on DPNow; look for a small arrow head pointing downwards near the top right and this pops up a menu. In that menu the camera icon opens the exif data.

I was slightly conservative with f-stop to assist in focus dof, but nothing is smaller than f/5.6.

For me hand holding isn't too difficult, but I did look for convenient places to rest me supporting arm wherever possible.
