E-m1 (classic) won't start - clicking

Hi. My oldish e-m1 has just started refusing to start. Instead I fell get a faint clicking sound and the evf flashes bright white. I've tried different batteries and lenses. Any other ideas?

Shutter failure is my uneducated guess.

I had similar with my EPL 5. Not too expensive to repair, 99 in my case several years ago. Worth fixing if you value the camera....

Sounds exactly the same as what finished my E-M1 - it tipped me into buying a Mk.ii.

Look into the front of the camera - is the shutter closed over the sensor?

Yes, the shutter is closed. Does that mean it's "finished"? :-( I'd be *very* disappointed.

Much as I might like a Mark II, I'm normally very reluctant to reward a manufacturer for poor quality goods by spending more with them. Creates the wrong incentives. (When my Epson printer gave out too soon and neither pc World nor Epson would fix it, I replaced it with an HP bought from Maplin. Not going to put either company out of business but it makes a tiny contribution to incentivising reliability).

I'm sure it's repairable at much less cost than a new camera

I must admit that my E-M1 had more than its fair share of problems, including failure of a strap lug (a well-known defect), control wheel, and shutter, but it was all covered under warranty.

It might be worth complaining to Olympus, if it is out of warranty, depending on how heavily used the camera is - they may defray some of the cost.

When my camera came back from repair, it looked like new, so I part-exchanged it for a Mk.ii for a good price.

100-ish repair sounds more prudent than 850 mark II with my current finances. :-)

Sounds a good move to me. I never got on with Epson printers - they seemed to prioritise their own ideas over the user! For example, they would suddenly embark on a lengthy cleaning cycle, just when one had an urgent print job to deliver, or they would claim a cartridge was empty and refuse to print, when there was obviously plenty of ink sloshing about inside. I have never had any problems with my HP printers and they seem to achieve a very good compromise between delivering fast text printing and good colour photo printing.
