Re: Pinch my nipples

I wouldn't wish to offend anyone by posting jokes that cross the line of decency, but I would hate to see this generally pleasant and open minded forum become dull and sterile as so many others have in the interests of bland political correctness.

It also worries me that so many people look for reasons to be offended nowadays; not just here, but in every walk of life. If every forum, pub, club, and workplace were to be run to placate such people I genuinely believe we would all be poorer for it.

But it wouldn't end there; for the 'offended few' would still be unhappy, and would demand tighter and tighter censorship until we were unable to post anything other than the most benign statements and opinions.

Laughter is good for us ALL. Please don't let them take that pleasure away.

Nigel, there must be something in the rules here - because some members can openly slag off in an offensive manner, others photos and their ability with their camera and that is not classed as offensive

I shall explore points of reference, - because Sense and Sensibility has to be the order of the day. After all, this is an Olympus branded forum and the flack hits their fan on kickback.

Re: Pinch my nipples

Brilliant and so funny and I have suggested my wife tries it next time she has an issue with a product and the store are being awkward!

Sad to see the PC brigade may be getting too sensitive over a harmless bit of humour, dread to think what their reactions are to some of the photos posted.

I agree. I know it doesn't concern me, but I would be very interested to know why those concerned thought the joke was offensive?

If somebody has led a very sheltered life and is genuinely embarrassed by such humour I would have some sympathy.

But if it is someone trying to make misguided political points about women's rights and similar politically correct clap trap I would take a very different view.

Nigel, this is EXACTLY WHY I asked 1) who is/are the Complainants and 2) Precisely What content offended them ?

Without which, no one can understand their point of view

It appears to date, the content is that of sexual stimulation by Nipple Tweeking - but that is the reader reading into the sexual content, I for one read into the joke/humour and what a great idea as IanSky says to get a refund ...

although I am not sure of the equivalent a male could do to get a refund ... I shall get my hat ...

I wouldn't expect to be told who the Complainant is, but I agree it would be helpful to know on what grounds they are complaining.

As you have intimated, I suspect this is more about gender equality and political correctness than any genuine embarrassment.

Now, who reads the Grauniad around here?

Re: Pinch my nipples

Not very good at reading the warning signs are you, Chevvy. Ironically I have deliberately kept this thread open because I don't want to over-regulate this forum, yet you seem determined to force me to close it by attempting to undermine my position, taking the thread way off topic, and trying to to re-open old issues. Perhaps you need another short holiday and when you come back remember - it's three strikes and you're out!

Re: Pinch my nipples

John, et al, may I just say something here. I'm disappointed that it has provoked such controversy, and, indeed, complaints. I would definitely NOT post a joke here that I couldn't, or hadn't already, shown my wife. We aren't prudes, but we do draw lines ourselves on what we wish to see, read, or forward as e-mails.

I don't think the comment about showing a 12 year old is really valid, since this forum is about a pretty expensive hobby, and whilst children do take photos, until they are of an age where they are pretty much adults, they aren't likely to join and participate in forum activities.

I have also seen material on TV before the 9 o'clock watershed that could be deemed very unsuitable for children - very strong language, sexual references, and also graphic violence/injury. Several years ago, my wife and I went to the Pickering WW2 weekend; and at the end we went to the POW camp that is now a museum. School parties came round whilst we were there. Now there is a section with many photos of Belsen and Auschwitz, and it has notices saying 'no-one under 12 without supervision'. Some girls who must have been about 9 or 10 went in on their own. Were they fazed by what they saw? Frankly, no. We were more fazed by the fact that they were not 'put off' by the photographs in there.

On the other hand, a U3A friend asked me about starting a calligraphy group, and I showed her a book cover that I had drawn for a friend's book, which, in context with the book's content, depicted a topless young woman. She was horrified - "I have a problem with nudity", she said.

As a result of the controversy over the joke, I will now probably not post any more jokes. I don't want to offend anyone; and it is impossible to judge what will and won't offend. There will always be someone out there who sees things differently.

You will note my post about photographs of children. Again, it's an area where nowadays, I feel completely at sea. I have my opinion; but that isn't good enough any more.

I'd like to register that I have no objection to the OP. It was very funny and I'd be really disappointed if it were redacted because of a couple of narrow-minded complaints. -

Re: Pinch my nipples

OK, I have the permission of one of the complainants to quote their messages.

Original message:-

Hi John, I like a good joke & sometimes I let myself have a laugh at some gutter humour, but maybe it's starting to go a bit far in my estimation with KeithL's last thread, titled Pinch my nipples.

Second message:-

Thanks John. Sorry to put you in the thick of it again. I guess it was more confronting with the title on the front page & if that had been different then maybe it wouldn't have had the same impact, but to me this one was a little crass, but that's just me. It's interesting with the response of some which reminds of when smoking became restricted in some places & the indignant response some gave. OK, I won't go there either. Anyhow, thanks for all your input & efforts.

Third message:-

John, I'm really sorry it has come to the point it has & that you've had to cop the flack. I wouldn't mind telling them my viewpoint except it would only prolong the argument & it seems they have worked themselves up somewhat, so I don't think it would be wise now anyhow.

I think the thing that is pushing the boundaries in my mind was the title on the front page & while I think the joke itself was a little crass I don't think it would be 'in my face' the same if the title could have been more subtle or with a hint of content, but another thread is probably over-reacting in response with "First Time (could be classed as too rude)", but at least those that don't want to read it won't go there. , but then I went there with "Pinch My Nipples" but I had to see what it was about.

Anyhow, the last thing I would want is have the forum become "dull & boring" because we can't enjoy a good & maybe risqué joke & nor would I want to limit nude photos either (as implied by some), including full frontal if it is done tastefully as it is all a legitimate part of photography (just not porn etc though), but maybe there has been an increase in risqué jokes where maybe some poster might be thinking it must be fine because Jo Bloggs did & then the next poster goes that little bit further in content & then it balloons with many jokes pushing the boundaries, so I guess that is why I felt I should highlight Keith's posting this time.

I have now received a message from a third member, confirming that they too found the post distasteful.

Re: Pinch my nipples

Thank you John. That is interesting, and I feel puts the issue in a much clearer perspective.

Whilst I found the joke funny I did wonder about the 'pinch' bit, as that sounded painful, and could perhaps be misconstrued.

Re: Pinch my nipples

Here's the comment from the second complainant:-

Whilst I found this joke, and others in the same light, funny I feel that they are getting borderline and could easily be offensive to the less broad-minded. Some posts in this forum seem to be getting a little too "mens club" and may deter others from joining in.

Re: Pinch my nipples

Here's the comments of the third person:-

Hi John,

I just wanted to thank you for your sensitive moderating of this particular thread. I must confess that I didn't think it at all funny, and was the sort of joke the men would tell on the factory floor when I first started work (35 odd years ago), in order to embarrass one of the technologists, and one of the very few women as well.

I didn't like it then, but refused to show them my feelings in order that they would realise I wasn't an easy target to be intimidated by them. I still don't like so called jokes that are of a veiled sexual nature.
As you know, I didn't complain, and was going to post this on the forum, but decided not to inflame an already heated situation, but wanted you to know my feelings on it, and to thank you.

I also think that if any female has been sexually assaulted, "jokes" like this become very seedy, and can bring about bad memories.

Sorry to go on John, but I just feel quite strongly on the way you have been treated by some members who have taken justifying this to ridiculous levels seemingly to get a rise out of their idea of the "PC brigade".

Re: Pinch my nipples - now a discussion on acceptable boundaries

Here is my twopennyworth. Nobody wants to see or hear anything that is gratuitously offensive however, in today's politically charged environment, some people who need to speak out and be heard, fail to do so. I'm thinking about about the tragic events in Rotherham and some years ago, the Harringey debacle. I'm not comparing what I thought a rather unfunny joke with the duty of care on the part of those who have responsibility for young children. However, the muzzles are tightening with perhaps the exception of the BBC where wit and humour have been replaced by the 'F' word.
The joke in question will have amused some, offended others but on balance I feel that it is better to say what you want and tell risqué jokes than clam up altogether and live in a sanitised world. Thank you John for you wisdom, time and patience.

Re: Pinch my nipples - now a discussion on acceptable boundaries

Reading these complaints, John, I wish that I hadn't posted it, and I'm quite upset that anyone found it offensive, together with the response on both side of the argument. My apologies to those who complained.

I will most definitely not post any jokes in future - and I'm not saying that to 'get at' anyone. I think that it is impossible to gauge people's reactions to jokes, and as I said, generally (a) use my wife's reaction as a yardstick, and (b) I don't normally send jokes to anyone whom I don't know very well, and how they would react.

I would have much preferred it if you had simply deleted it.
