Anyone use a graphics tablet?

I recently inherited a Wacom Graphire 4 and was wondering whether anyone uses something similar for image editing. It seems a little fiddly, so practice is required but is it worthwhile, or do you not find it any better than a mouse?

Cheers,
Mike

Re: Anyone use a graphics tablet?

I did get one but found that the mouse did as good a job, plus there was a compatibility issue with my iMac.
I have started a course on Photoshop and may dig out the tablet and try again, if I remember, I was not cutting out shapes or selecting areas, in fact, I didn't use PS, I used Lightroom, but now I am getting to grips with PS it might be a good idea to try again.
If you know someone nearby who uses a table, it might be a good idea to have a try on theirs.

Re: Anyone use a graphics tablet?

I've got an Intuos Wacom, but rarely use it as I can't get used to the disconnection between the tablet and the screen.

Re: Anyone use a graphics tablet?

Over a decade for me. I found using one much quicker than a mouse for certain jobs such as cleaning up dust on 20 to 40 mp film scans and selecting accurately.

Re: Anyone use a graphics tablet?

I use one for fine resolution work, and usually use mouse and pen simultaneously.

Re: Anyone use a graphics tablet?

Hi Mike, I have the Intous A4 and like it - not love it yet ! It takes some getting used to ... change of habit MOUSING for 30+ years is hard work

But it is 1) much more efficient at "pixel editing" and 2) the stylus is more like a pen or paintbrush and thus no the repetative strain on the lower arm and wrist - which for those who do lots of photo art/pixel edits MUCH BETTER all around

Infact, NOW I am getting rid of the mouse & keyboard and using stylus and the on screen keyboard with stylus Cheers for the INSPIRATION

Re: Anyone use a graphics tablet?

Another vote of support for the Wacom pad, I use it more for Photoshop than for Aperture but have also used it on Aperture.

Practice using the pad and pointer while playing Solitaire

Re: Anyone use a graphics tablet?

Been using various Wacom tablets for the past 25 years, more natural to hold a pen and it just works whatever software I'm using. Now for image editing / creation the Wacom takes it to a different level due to the pressure sensitivity and control it will allow, whereas the mouse is very unnatural in use. I use one with a Mac and PC, always using the latest drivers from the Wacom website never had a problem.

Check out this video for more information, it gets a thumbs up from me.

Re: Anyone use a graphics tablet?

Like David M & Stuart G I use one all the time for photoshop. Often using both mouse and tablet.
Excellent for fine control and I find them a lot quicker all round. But I guess it's what you get used to.

Re: Anyone use a graphics tablet?

I've been using a Wacom Intuos for years - for everything, not just photo editing - and find it excellent. It did take a bit of getting used to, but I found playing a few idiot games like Solitaire and Minesweeper soon increased the fluency. I would hate to try editing without it now.

You can download up to date drivers from their site, I think it gives you a search so you can be sure it matches your tablet model and operating system. I have found that Windoze tends to lose the driver every now and again, I think this is a "feature" of Windoze rather than Wacom, but of course Micros**t refuse to acknowledge it. So I still have a mouse, and have a shortcut on the desktop to the folder containing the driver install files so it's dead easy to reload it.

Ciao ... John

Re: Anyone use a graphics tablet?

Sounds like it's probably worth persevering with then. Think I'm going to have to find a bigger desk, though...

Thanks for your thoughts.

I use an A5 and find it plenty big enough.
