Eastern Barn Owl

August 3 - Eastern Barn Owl - was being harrassed by a couple of Australian Ravens and a Pied Currawong in the carpark at work.

My bird book(s) say not that common in the ACT EXCEPT when there is a mouse plague - well bless my cotton socks.

And this is one of the harrassers.

Re: Eastern Barn Owl

Lovely, thanks for sharing.

Barn Owl is the most widely distributed owl species, and also one of the most widespread of all birds. Unfortunately we don't have them here, only a few specimens that should be viewed an outpost at the extreme of the distribution range. Cold and pesticides have taken their toll.

Re: Eastern Barn Owl

This is cool - ahh hot - didn't knew they would go south that far! I have them breeding here, just 25m away, in the neighbours barn. I have to photograph them in complete darkness though!

Re: Eastern Barn Owl

I wanted to show you some evidence of the barn owls I was talking about in my above comment:

Here are the juvenile Barn Owls (Tyto alba) at their nesting site in the neighbours barn - taken from my garden in summer 2010, in complete darkness. With the E-520 mounted on a tripod; I used AF and then locked it by switching the AF-MF button on the 70-300 to MF. Two seconds self timer and mirror pre release was used; needed an about 2sec exposure, with me illuminating the scenery by means of my LED-headlamp.

When they finally left the nest I had to catch and rescue one of them in our own barn, where the cat had had some fun with it - chasing it about
