9 homophones.
won, too, reel, there, right, their, chant's, practice, yore.

6 apostrophes.
'liking' (2), statuse's, chant's, homophone's, apostrophe's.

"chant's" should get a bonus point as it appears in both categories.

I was hoping I might be awarded a bonus point for inventiveness that one!

And just in case anyone thought I might be allowing standards to slip, I was thinking of Gregorian Chant rather than the more common variety heard at football stadia and suchlike, which I suspect FaceBook users will be more familiar with.

My father was an organist and I served my time as a chorister so Anglican Chant was what I assumed.

Which brings to mind "The King's Singers" . Remember them? They did a recording of "The Highway Code" set to an Anglican Chant.

Blimey! Just did a search and they're still in business (but not of course the original singers) and are "on" Faceache and Twatter.

Haha! I thought it rather amusing when a friend emailed it to me and I hoped it would give others a laugh too, if I shared it here.

There have been some great responses.

Actually, for me John's amusing observation highlights what I perceive to be a worrying trend that is evolving out of "social media". We seem to be developing generations of people who don't appear to be able to discriminate between "real World" social interaction and the "virtual" world with sometimes disasterous consequenses, not to mention murdering the English language.

Re: Beyond Facebook

An entertaining thread, but can I add one defence for Facebook and Twitter. When we were in France last week our Grandson was taken to hospital and moved into a high dependency ward overnight. It was easy for his parents to update all who cared about how he was doing. I remember how draining it was to have to phone people when my husband was in hospital. It has a place.

We appreciated it as a way to see pictures of him and find out how he was doing.

Plus it can be very powerful when big companies won't honour refunds. They don't like social media then!

The original recording of the Highway Code is available on YouTube, and is an excellent example of Anglican Chant; still used by some choirmasters I believe!

It is a worrying trend indeed. It concerns me that some people now seem unable to communicate except by using text speak, but it concerns me even more that some are so engrossed in social media that they will walk across a busy road without once lifting their eyes from their smartphones.

Maybe Darwinism and natural selection will help to preserve humankind from itself?

9 homophones and 4 apostrophes. (Or should that read 9 gay bashers and 4 fans?) I wasn't counting the single quotes around likings. Interesting that when my daughter got her new job recently against national competition, the employer said she was the only one who applied who could string proper English sentences together when speaking!

And, folks, I refer you to the first shot of my "Just cruisin'" thread.....
