A dozen Kites Flying

We went to Cliveden with friends and stopped at theirs for "tea" after ... BUT I was taken by a Kite or two or three or more ... overhead ... ENJOY

No tripod, handheld and "Laid Back"right back over the car bonnet as some flew overhead

SOME of these look the same, look again they are not ! Can do better - the light was not good mainly cloudy with the occasional tiny shaft of light and bit of blue sky - will try again in a few weeks on a FORECAST summers BRIGHT DAY

Some very good ones there.
Any reason why they are going in the same direction?

Re: A dozen Kites Flying

Certainly a few crackers there Chevvy, a little extra PP in Capture One and you would have some stunners
Did you shoot RAW?

Re: A dozen Kites Flying

Tom and Eva, Many Thanks

Huw, yes in RAW - a bit of time needed in Pro7 processing needed - but I shall leave it, for when the E-5 gets back from Olympus - as it was playing up - lots ! Focus probs and over exposures

With great light and now trained them "to feed on chicken wings" in one place I know much better can be produced to start in RAW, before Pro7 etc., processing

Re: A dozen Kites Flying

Hi Chevvy, I think 1 to 4 are crackers and I would concentrate on those for PP were they my shots (I wish they were!!)
Also looks like number 2 and the last one the same image, exactly the same time captured??

Went for some red kites today. I was told that they always fly into the wind... so I guess the wind must have been blowing right to left, that's why they all appear to be flying from left to right

Looking at the images I got, I have to doff my hat to you Chevvy, great images! I'll post mine soon

edit: They fly into the wind when swooping down and flying back up. I'm sure they're happy to fly with the wind when flying otherwise

Re: A dozen Kites Flying

Rutwij, I look forward to seeing your Red Kites !

Bait them - Chicken wings 2 a penny and cook them off (which makes a stronger scent, they "smell" sensing lamb from high above ... feed them a few days running - in the same locale - same time ! 3 or 4 days is enough to "HAVE THEM ADD IT TO THEIR DINING TABLES" sori aps came on ... computer has a mind of its own ...

IS off ; wind up the ISO ; and Shutter speed and F down to 2.8 WHEN you focus on (manual focus to start off CAF)

Have the light behind you and the food unless you want a few shots of the back end and them taking off

Best of shots

Re: A dozen Kites Flying

Chevvy, try a few shots at +7 Exposure compensation, might slow the shutter down a notch, but should lighten the underwings.
I am SO jealous Had a Red Kite around for 3 years, and still not a usable shot blame the photographer, not the camera.

The place we visited was a place they feed the red kites every day. The guy who feeds them said that they get 40-50 kites at a time in the peak time during winter. There were about 20 or so of them when we went there on Saturday.

I didn't turn IS off DOH!! Well, there's always next time

My images are now up in another thread in foto fair. The IQ wasn't great because of the big crops I had to go for, and I think the IS caused a lot of the images to be out of focus
