Anyone using a Sky+HD 2TB box to store jpgs?

Hi is anyone using their Sky+HD 2TB box to store jpgs and then view them on the tv. I am looking to upgrade to Sky HD and am trying to justify to SWMBO that the 2 TB box is the better option because I could store pictures on it. I am assuming that with an Ethernet connection I could you use my desktop pc to transfer files. Anyone experience of this? Thanks John

Re: Anyone using a Sky+HD 2TB box to store jpgs?

I store my jpgs mp4 and Music files on the computer (plus external drive for backup) then use a small Apple TV box (99) attached to the TV via HDMI Lead that I wireless stream photos and movies to. I find this works extremely well considering the TV and computer are in separate rooms about 25 feet apart.

The Apple TV works with PC & Mac and remote controlled from the TV screen you just need to install iTunes for it to make the connection. It even streams photos and videos from my Flickr and Vimeo accounts. In addition I've installed some software called Plex media server on the computer plus an App from Plex on my iPad which then operates as a very slick remote control and allows more file formats to play through the Apple TV. It is simple to operate and delivers the results faultlessly.

Well that's my setup and it works for me.

Thanks Tom what size is your Apple TV box? I assume for all this to work you need computer on? What attracts me is the 2TB of storage on the Sky box. I am running out of storage on my main desktop computer and I saw this as a possible option.

Thanks for the link I shall be looking for additional storage as a separate project.

The question now is do I go for a free Sky HD+ box circa 500GB or can I store some of my jpgs on the sky + HD 2TB box at the additional cost of 49. I tried skys chat room with this question and the answer I got was yes I could use the box to store and view jpgs. I rate the answer as low because the English was so bad I am not sure the person understood the question.

Hence my question here. If the sky + box is formatted compatible with Windows 7 I would have thought it would be useful for showing off pictures to friends and family when they visit. Currently I load a memory stick and put that in the Blueray player.

Re: Anyone using a Sky+HD 2TB box to store jpgs?

I have a 2TB sky box joined to my router I never thought of this as my TV has a SD slot and I usually show photos using that will give it a try over the weekend if I get a chance but I will be away for part of it so it could be monday before I get round to it.

Re: Anyone using a Sky+HD 2TB box to store jpgs?

I think your best solution would be to purchase the 2TB drive at 59 load it with music photos and videos get the WD Western Digital media streamer which connects to the TV with a simple HDMI LEAD and plug the 2TB drive into it select the AV channel its been assigned to and navigate with the remote.

I've got a WD streamer but now use the Apple Tv for personal preference, I think the WD has a couple of USB sockets so you could connect 2 drives and switch between them.

BTW the Apple TV box has no storage it's a streamer only works at 1080P gives great results.

Re: Anyone using a Sky+HD 2TB box to store jpgs?

One of the ways to recover the Sky box from problems involves loosing all the data on the box. Also if you have problems with the Sky box and have to get the Sky man in to replace the box then you loose the contents of the disk.

I would not use the Sky box for any data you do not want to loose.
