Compact outdoor camera

Hi folks
I have been rather out of the system due to family problems for a while & I am very out of touch with what's available. Does any body have any good recommendations for a good quality compact camera with a view finder rather than just a screen. I want something for outdoors, compact & light that I can ski & cycle with, I have had to many years skiing with a E3 & 50~200 lens.

Re: Compact outdoor camera

What about an Olympus Tough?

If you want interchangeable lenses (and the ability to use your E3 lenses) an Olympus OM-D is quite small and weather resistant. With a small pancake lens it is pocketable.

Re: Compact outdoor camera

In my view (pun!) one of the best semi-compacts with a viewfinder is the Fuji X10/20. But it's not especially light, and perhaps larger than you want. Viewfinder compacts are getting rare these days, unfortunately.

You could always fit a finder on an XZ-1 or 2, but it makes it a wee bit bulky.

Re: Compact outdoor camera

Agree with Stephen fuji x10/20..then there is the new Panasonic LF1
Viewfinder compacts are something Olympus dont do ....yet.
As for the 'Tough' cameras ...all manufacturers rely on a screen

Re: Compact outdoor camera

The XZ-1 is smaller than the X10/20 and is great machine it amazing how you can get by without the viewfinder as I dont have one yet.

Re: Compact outdoor camera

Thanks for everyone's reply's, the problem if you want to take any pics when your skiing on a Sunny day you can't seem the screen, well not vey well. Screens are great but I still like to have a view finder. My old mountain camera ( film ) was a minox, not sure on the spelling but it took good pics or the size.

Re: Compact outdoor camera

I can agree with alfbranch as I too have the XZ-1. The optional Digi viewfinder does make it somewhat bulky but it is 'optional' - take it off when not needed and it easily fits into a small pocket until required. The advantage, is that it swivels so can be used as an overhead viewer to look above peoples heads or when laying the camera flat on the ground for unusual low-level shots.

As your needs demand, you might have to look further than the Olympus brand.

Re: Compact outdoor camera

A friend has one and the picture quality is excellent, his only adverse comment is that with anything bar a pancake lens it is bulky and awkward to carry. Hope that helps?

The XZ-1 gets a BIG thumbs up from me.

Compact outdoor camera

One of the problems not all compacts have a viewfinder, I don't mind a screen but if I had a choice of which I could do with out it would be the screen every time.
Has any body had any dealings with procamerashop.co.uk

Many thanks

Re: Compact outdoor camera

I too liked the XZ1 ......until I left the car unlocked one night, doh!

I have had a play with the fuji x100, breathtaking image quality if you can live with a fixed lens (probably not given your previous set-up)

I don't think there is a true "pocket" camera with a viewfinder unless you are talking big coat pockets.

I have been looking at the same sort of compacts and cannot make my mind up.

Compact outdoor camera

Any one dealt with digitalrev.com. Just wondered if they would be grey imports. The camera I am thinking of purchasing is the fuji x20 as a compromise for a compact that I can hopefully fit in a pocket when I am skiing etc & most importantly a view finder.

Many thanks
