I went to the camera shop today...

... to see and feel what the e620 looked and felt like.

Got to say I was so very disappointed not with the camera, but with the "help" I got in the shops

First shop didnt seem to have any Oly stuff except the 420, and not one sales assistant came over.
Went to the next store, and they were reasonably helpful. The girl was quite knowledgeable and quite willing for me to try various lenses to see how balanced the camera was and how heavy it was.
Finally I went into Jessops. I was walking around the store and the shop assistant came over when she saw me looking at the Oly stand, and asked if there was any reason I was looking at the Oly. When I said I already owned one, "why did I want to stick with the brand" (or words to that effect)... I did ask about deals they had, but she said that any deals would be on the internet...
To say I'm annoyed is an understatement! For all the shop assistants knew, I may have been in the market to spend a fair amount of money, but with the exception of Jacobs, nobody seemed to want to show me any Oly gear, let alone let me try it with different combinations... what happened to customer service

Re: I went to the camera shop today...

I would stick to the stores who are 'proper' Oly dealers (they exist you know). Other than that get a feel of equipment from fellow forum members and then buy at the cheapest price online.
Your experience is the price we have to pay for sticking with Olympus. Canon and Nikon purchasers don't get this problem, I am sure!

Re: I went to the camera shop today...

I agree its the price we have to pay to be "different", but with any expensive purchase (and the fact that I have quite bad RSI) I need to know whether something would feel right in my hands.
Jessops were trying to steer me towards the canon cabinet (as they do some quite nice light models now madam... MADAM... excuse me, I'm not french you know.. )

I was unaware proper Oly dealers existed!

Re: I went to the camera shop today...

The Olympus specialist branches of LCE have always seemed quite keen to push Olympus, at least my closest in Taunton was. Also, I bought my E30 at Jessops in Yeovil when it was on offer and, at that time, the assistant that I spoke to also seemed to acknowledge the capability of the E series. I must admit that they no longer have any on display so I doubt that that would be the case now.

I would suggest that to try an E series camera, find your nearest LCE Oly specialist. Look at LCE on line to find those stores and phone them first to find out what they have in stock.

Re: I went to the camera shop today...

another vote for LCE, and if you become a regular you seem to get a consistent discount (from my experience).

I have some sympathy with Jessops and Curry's DIgital staff because they really do have no idea what they are going to have to sell tomorrow - so they push what they have some comfort in (stock wise). Personally I would do the same if I worked there and had a sales target.

Re: I went to the camera shop today...

Thanks Photo_owl, but LCE is the first store I went into But its only a small store, and looking at all the gear in there, my guess is that it wasnt a Oly specialist one.

I'm not sure whether I have sympathy for the Jessop sales staff. It was the only store I went into which had more sales staff than customers. The other 2 seemed very busy in comparison.

If your branch hasnt got the stock a customer is asking for, wouldnt it be to their advantage to try their other branches to try and hit their sales target? Oh well, I wont be going back to Jessops for any equipment in future. The other 2 stores can have my money instead .

I suppose the thing that annoys me the most about this is the lack of customer service. When I used film cameras I was a very regular visitor to Jessops, for myself, and regular trips there for my workplace, and nothing was ever too much trouble. It saddens me to see the state of the shop today.

Re: I went to the camera shop today...

I think there is huge local variation in all these stores - a month ago someone here posted that a local store did source a special offer from another store overnight for them, and LCE have both sourced ON from another store and from Oly Germany for me. LCE is more understandable in that it's a franchise rather than a chain.

I`m not sure how true it is that we get bad service for being Olympus customers, I think that service has just gone down the drain in general in this country!

Re: I went to the camera shop today...

I agree with that Edward. Wherever possible I try to buy from a shop, it keeps people in work, and if we all bought on the internet, we would never be able to physically see/try the objects before we buy them. But if this lack of customer service continues, or gets worse, many people will be turned off by that, and buy everything over the net... specially when its cheaper.
But two thumbs up for Jacobs service yesterday. I shall be visiting there in the future...

I didn't know it was a franchise. Perhaps that's a better model for a chain. I've bought a number of things over the phone from various LCE stores and received first class service - and also in person in the Norwich shop, which has plenty of Olympus stuff.

Re: I went to the camera shop today...

Targets.

That's the problem with camera shops and the country in general.

Schools are targetted in getting exam results rather than getting the best from each pupil.

Police are targetted on number of convictions which means they go for the easy hits rather than more difficult to solve crimes, regardless of severity.

Bank staff are targetted on selling insurance instead of providing a high quality banking service which most customers want.

The NHS is targetted on waiting lists rather than quality of treatment.

Shoe shop staff would rather not sell you a pair of shoes at all than sell you a pair without the polish, because in doing so they would fail to meet their targets.

And camera shop staff are targetted on selling specific brands rather than just on volume.

Play Jessops at their own game. Insist on having a good look at the Oly gear, then buy cheaper on the internet. Buy in the shop only if they are genuinely helpful and respectful of your preferences. Jessops stores vary between really good and downright rubbish.

Targets: I so totally agree John. The world is so disappointing sometimes. These days people seem to have lost the knack of doing the right thing and doing it properly. The primary objectives of most activities now seem to have been overtaken by targets and even procedures.

How often do we find all ourselves in a situation where someone says they cannot (when they usually mean will not) do something that would clearly produce a result in the task at hand, because "we don't do it that way" or some other equally inane excuse? The general dumbing down is so complete that they don't even realise their lack of logic or common sense.

I'll nip off and be curmudgeonly in the corner for a bit

And the country is going to the dogs, because the only people who know how to run it are either cutting hair or driving taxis!
