Stylus 1s

Anyone got a Stylus 1s? I'm considering getting one for my better half and was looking for some user info and experience.
The alternative would be a Panasonic TZ70 if she wants to go smaller but I'm keen to understand the differences in IQ that would bring.

Re: Stylus 1s

Hi Phill, try this thread link for opinions and other snippets of info. http://e-group.uk.net/forum/showthread.php?t=37022

This may also help...

Olympus has released v2.0 firmware for its OM-D styled premium compact camera, the Stylus 1, which will enable users to fit a wide angle converter to the lens. Using the new CLA-14 adapter the camera will now operate with the 0.8x WCON-08X wide angle converter to take the widest setting from 28mm equiv. to 22.4mm while maintaining the f/2.8 maximum aperture. This, combined with the CLA-13 adapter and the 1.7x TCON-17X tele-converter, gives the Stylus 1 a potential focal range of 22.4-510mm equiv. from its 28-300mm equiv. lens.

The firmware also introduces a stepped zoom function that makes it easier to adjust the lens to popular focal length settings, as focal lengths will now be displayed for the user in familiar 35mm terms.

Interval shooting has also been introduced, with up to 999 images recordable in a sequence of up to a day apart, and the time lapse video mode from the company’s OM-D cameras will be introduced.

STYLUS 1 Firmware Upgrade v2.0
MAIN FEATURES:
  • Compatibility with slim and lightweight WCON-08X wide converter lens and CLA-14 adapter, for wide-angle shots to 22.4mm* at 1:2.8 aperture without heavy equipment
  • Interval Shooting and Time Lapse Movie for capturing spectacular phenomena over 24 hours
  • Compatibility with OI.Share App v2.5 for remote shutter release from a smartphone via WiFi
  • Step Zoom for instantly setting popular 35mm focal lengths in steps, from 28mm to 300mm
  • 35mm equivalent shown in focal length display in Electronic Viewfinder or LCD monitor
  • Small target AF for pinpoint auto focus
  • Focus Peaking for easier Manual Focus
  • Firmware is downloadable for free via the online Olympus Digital Camera Updater

Re: Stylus 1s

The Stylus 1s is the same as the updated Stylus 1 with FW 2.0 except a slight cosmetic difference in the top dial & the grip which went from a cross pattern to a leather look finish (which I would have preferred). It uses the same sensor as the XZ-2 (1/1.7" CMOS sensor). Even now I would still choose this camera as a supplement to my OM-D gear for those occasions a single, all in one smallish camera with a constant f2.8 10.7 X zoom lens (same angle of view as using M4/3's 14-150mm lens) with the same EVF as the E-M10 is all I would want to carry. I love the possible 7fps ability with it too. Also, indoors with my grandson doing his stuff I could also use the flash on sequential shooting which I think was about (at least) a shot per second. We (family) were recently at The Campbell Rhododendron Gardens - Blackheath & my daughter was using the Stylus 1 & I was using my E-M1 & 12-50 lens & a number of times she got better results than I did. She didn't know how to (or want to) switch to macro (which is only a close up really) on the Stylus 1 & the 12-50 lens did better there, but her photos certainly looked good though. Maybe I'll get around to posting some of those photos eventually.

One thing to remember, it is meant to be an advanced compact camera so it does do a few more things (lots actually, including raw) that someone just wanting a P&S might not use, but it is still good to use as a P&S too (so long as the user doesn't flip the front switch lever & wonder why it won't AF as it changes to MF with the Front Lens Ring). It is still quite customisable in the Menu.

Here are some photos of it. First my E-M5 & Stylus side by side (the Stylus 1 only appears wider because of the strap & being closer).

Front view

And with the flash popped up (but can be overlooked because it is so low).

BTW, the E-M10 is actually a little lower because of a better design around the hotshoe.

Re: Stylus 1s

I really wish I'd stuck to my guns and bought a Stylus-1 instead of the Olympus SH-2 for my wife. The SH-2 gets very little use and the main reason for that is the lack of an optical viewfinder.

Re: Stylus 1s

Thanks guys very helpful. It's the optical vufinder that I think will seal the deal if the overall size is small enough for her. Mind you from the info above maybe I'll just have to get one myself

Re: Stylus 1s

Just for the sake of it, here are a couple of photos from each camera with both set on Natural. The Stylus 1 doesn't appear as warm here but I adjusted one image (from the raw file) with a +2 saturation to show how it compares after that adjustment is set.

Stylus 1

With +2 Saturation in Natural

E-M1 & 12-50 lens

I hope that helps.

Re: Stylus 1s

Thanks Ross yes it all helps. From what I've seen so far it's a very capable little camera and more than up to what my wife wants. It would probably cover most of my uses too.I just need to get her into a local shop to handle one. More difficult to do than I'd have imagined actually. Can't believe she doesn't want to go "shopping"

Re: Stylus 1s

I looked at one of these at the weekend in Jessops ( whilst debating with the Nikon sales lady who kept saying that m43 was no good due to its battery life obviously I told her that with all the extra space I have as my lenses are smaller, I can have many batteries and a back that works ). Anyway...it looked and felt great but my concern is the sensor size..

I like a camera that I can just throw in to glovebox day to day and have just got a rx100 mk2 which in terms of IQ is excellent but it's a little "clinical". So I might be tempted by the 1s next year

Re: Stylus 1s

My daughter bought a sony RX100 mk 2 about 6 months ago and loves it. I'll admit its a great little camera and she does get some lovely shots. Only problems for us are, it's very small to hold, doesn't have an EVF and has a smaller zoom, otherwise at the current prices due to the later models its quite a bargain.

Yes, it is a bigger sensor than the Stylus 1(s) at 1" which is 13.2 x 8.8 mm but the lens is F1.8 - F4.9 with a 3.6 X zoom (28–100 mm equiv. 35mm) & not the constant F2.8 10.7 X zoom (28–300 mm equiv. 35mm) of the Stylus 1. With less reach & a darker lens at the longer end (can't call it long ) it loses some of its larger sensor advantage over the smaller 1/1.7" (7.6 x 5.7 mm) of the Stylus 1. I would still choose the Stylus 1 with that choice.

Re: Stylus 1s

Thanks Ross. I used to have an xf1 which produced some awesome images but even that had a larger sensor ( 8.8 X 6.6 mm ) so I might have to give this one a miss
