Thumbs up Olympus Dual IS FW updates for many camera models.

It looks like all 16MP camera models that don't already have 5-axis Sync IS are getting an alternative FW update, Olympus Dual IS, found here. http://www.olympus.co.jp/en/support/...tware/firm/e1/

This is the update description for the E-M5 (the first of the 16MP models).

Quote:
Ver.2.2
(Jan.28 2016)
Compatible with Olympus lens with a built-in image stabilizing function.
* The camera body recognizes the IS built into the lens, allowing for optimal image stabilizing effects.
* Not compatible with 5 axis Sync IS.
* You can get the effects of rolling stabilization from the IS function of the body, along with the effects of image stabilization from the IS function of the lens.
Compatible with Windows 10.

Re: Olympus Dual IS FW updates for many camera models.

Thanks Ross. I saw some info on the rumour site but that did not say anything about the E-M5 Mk1 and was despondent again as this seems to be the forgotten black sheep in the family these days.

From my play with the 300mm F4 I thought how nice it would be to let the lens do its own IS and the camera to deal with the other axes... and lo and behold it comes to pass. Well I think thats what it means as the text is not too convincing... what exactly does "not compatible with 5 axis Sync IS" actually mean in terms of what the update does (I posted earlier that lens and camera IS systems fight each other).

It just means the 5 axis won't be in use, except for the rolling (or rotation from pressing the shutter button) being corrected in body while the lens OIS does the rest.

Hmm. Wonder if it wipes out all your existing settings ... no indication here. Think I'll let someone else go first...!

Margaret,
These are only 'dot' updates - i..e. The major version number is unchanged, so your settings should be preserved.
Usually customisations only get wiped when the update adds substantial new features (to the user menus etc.), as indicated by a change in the update's major version number (e.g. 1.2 to 2.0 etc).

Re: Olympus Dual IS FW updates for many camera models.

I've just noticed there were some updates to Panasonic lenses last year which allow dual IS. However it doesn't say anything about what the update actually achieves.

A Dr. Steen (on the 'rumor' site) tried out his(her) Pana 42.5 with the latest lens FW & this update on the E-P5 & only the lens IS was active, so it seems this update is only for the Olympus 300f4 lens use. It would be ideal if it could be used with all OIS lenses, but you can always hope that might be possible in the future.

Yes keeping the MFT standard accross the spectrum can only benefit everyone making it more user friendly and appealing

I finally got around to updating my E-M5 last night (after getting home from our wedding anniversary dinner ) & after I did the E-M1 4.1 FW update since that did have some important update detail that I wanted & only just found out about, so doing one or two just meant I got to bed 15 minutes later than just doing one. Both updated fine, thankfully.
