Spot on. "Lens buyer's remorse" - we've all been there, yes?

Actually, I've bought quite a lot of kit (mostly lenses), tried it, used it for a specific project, then sold it on. While I've lost money on some, I've actually made on others.

I know for a fact that it's cost me a lot less than it would have had I taken up golf.

As for the article on rules, there are some truths in there, but nothing new.

New rules should include: Lens Caps & Eye Cups - You will loose them

And the most important rule of all; hide the receipt when you get it home!

I have just got myself in hot water following my recent visit to Italy.

The hotel receipt showed an amount of €540 EUR for 'Camera' which took some explaining!

So, maybe if I buy my next 'camera' in Italy I can say it was an hotel room.

At least the accessories supplied with the camera were not itemised.

Re: photography-rules-that-should-exist-but-dont

Good stuff in that list.

Im guilty of several photo habits that need watching.

I use the rule of thirds too much. I use the ends of each zoom rather than mid focal lengths. I depend on narrow depth of field too much. I usually leave the tripod at home. I'm usually too lazy or to old to get up early enough for the perfect picture. I try to keep people out of my pictures.

Unfortunately I'm too old to change.

Try the Fibonacci golden ratio. It's like the RoT on Steroids.

Re: photography-rules-that-should-exist-but-dont

My No.1 rule is - apply the same rule as my wife for new equipment - "What this old lens, had it for ages just not used it much"

As my wife is not interested in photographic equipment it works, she photographs well so rule 2 is - "this will really improve portrait shoots of you".

2nd rule took a little more convincing when applied to a recent purchase of the Tamron 150-600 for my full frame

Before complaining about the weight of lenses just try carrying a couple of Mamiya RZ67 lenses for a few miles!
