Question Xd card error!

Well I guess it had to happen eventually...

I've just had my 1st Card Failure. It's an XD Type H, that I use all the time in my mju 1030 SW.

Anyone else had XD card failures

More importantly, anyone managed to get the images off once they go down.

I've tried the card in 4 bodies and 3 readers and nothing reads it...

Thanks - in anticipation

I hate to say it, but it does sound like the pictures are lost!

Re: Xd card error!

A long shot, but try it on a Linux machine if you normally use windows, or vice-versa.

Also, if Windows recognizes it as a drive at all, try the DOS emulator:

Start, run, cmd, (drive letter of card), DIR and see what you get.

Good luck!

I like "long shots" they sometimes pay off

I'd forgotten about DOS Direct -

It's in the freezer at the moment I brought an old S100 256Kb card back to life by freezing it many years ago. What the hell it can't get any worse

Would the software that Pete used be any use?

I found 'ZAR' - 'Zero Assumption Recovery' to work well:

Re: Xd card error!

I have 4 xd's for my 1030 SW
2gb M (2)
1gb M (1)
128mb (1)

I have them for 4 years and never had any problems with them.
Have you cleaned it already?
Maybe on your version, there is a lock on it ?

If it doesn't help, I don't know.

Btw. what camera bodies did you use it in?

Re: Xd card error!

Don't know if this is of any use but last month my Sandisk CF card went corrupt and the Sandisk Rescue Disk couldn't recover it. I tried Stellar Phoenix recovery ( trial basis ) and it managed to tell me that it had found 395 files on the CF Card. I then hard to pay $ 25.00 to actually use the software ro recover the files, which for me was a small price to pay to recover the missing photos.

Re: Xd card error!

I can recommend Getdatback for FAT ( a version is also available for NTFS). I've just recovered 24 photos that my partner deleted from her compact on a night out on Saturday!! The free trial version doesn't allow you to actually recover your files - but once it's found them you just open them in their native software and then save a copy somewhere safe. It claims to be able to find anything - even after a format of the disk.

Re: Xd card error!

Olympus were very good. They simply replaced the card.

Once the controller circuit is gone the only way to get data off is by direct access to the memory. There are firms that will do this but it's VERY expensive.

Fortunatly nothing important was lost.

Re: Xd card error!

So is this something specifically to do with how XD cards work - or all cards in general? If the former then are we better off just not using them unless we have to of course)?
