12-100 f4 Pro lens coming

Another big and pricy zoom lens I guess. I suspect the new E-M1ii will be bigger too. Not sure I like this trend to bigger cameras and big "Pro" lenses.

Maybe, maybe not. With the zoom range at f4 it maybe at a reasonable price (wishful thinking on my part). I do think the body would be 3-5mm deeper to accomodate the space needed for the twin SD card slots & maybe the new battery too (assuming the rumours are correct).

There's no real justification for increased camera size, unless the sensor grows proportionaly, but that's not going to happen. Take the GX8 as an example, it grew in size relative to the GX7, but why, to add more buttons, possibly? But really photographers don't need more functionality, what they need is the camera design to concentrate on the basics, to allow the user to have more control over the creative aspects of photograph making.

I sense a disturbance in the force. It's as if..... Every single Olympus user in the world suddenly went "Meh" and then fell silent.

Might just be me, but this is the least exciting lens ever.

Re: 12-100 f4 Pro lens coming

I think the extra 2mm at the short end would be very useful for a walk-about lens in comparison to the current 14-150mm model, particularly in an urban setting. If, for an 8.3x zoom, it can get close to the IQ to the 12-40mm Pro then I think it will be a welcome addition to the Pro range. Hopefully, a constant aperture of f/4 will not result in a lot of extra bulk.

When Olympus sent out one of their "what would you like to see in the system" surveys I did ask for a 12-120mm f/4 Pro zoom walk-about lens so all of this might be my fault

Cheers,

JohnGG

"Big" Pro lenses?

Have you seen the size and price of the Nikon 500mm and 600mm lenses?

I think we have some way to go before we can describe MZ Pro lenses as big.

If the lens is f4, isn't that a bit slow? . Such a long lens will demand a high shutter speed, the only thing left is to up the ISO, which has consequences. Then again, I'm not a long lens user. 50mm or 90mm equ is long enough for me.

Yes, the f/2.8 PRO lenses are to slow for some of us. But it's labeled PRO so they'll sell a few on that alone.

Re: 12-100 f4 Pro lens coming

The non-Pro lenses are quite or more than capable for so many situations, and I like the fact that the Pro lenses had a logical sequencing with one or two major gaps that I await with minor desperation(!) ... namely a 150-300mm (or thereabouts) tele zoom to give HQ flexibility in sports, action, BIF, low level aviation, etc., and to bring in some wider aperture glass.
So I'm a bit surprised by Olympus if they bring in this unnecessary overlap without any major benefits apart from being a Pro lens for the cover-all, one lens photographer! The new camera is meant to be addressing auto focus issues for the sports, action, BIF, low level aviation type photographers yet there is a glaring big gap in the HQ Pro lenses needed by those photographers. Bring on the big zoom Olympus, we all know it's needed to complement the new top end OM-D.
Regards
Chris

Re: 12-100 f4 Pro lens coming

Every camera / lens combination I've ever had has never covered everything I've wanted, so having a system that covers the vast majority of what I want, at a price I can justify, has been fully acceptable. The Olympus system has been the only one that came close to my needs in the film days and closer still with digital.

Getting the results with the kit I have, has been a very big part of the enjoyment I get from photography. Add to that the huge post processing capability we now have and there's little that can't be achieved.

12-100 for me would be too long, as I rarely need that range. When I do want to go long the 40-150 + 1.4 works perfectly and the 75-300 is producing better than expected results.

So lens wise, I don't need another one. As for fast glass, most often I'm at f/5.6 and rarely have I ever needed, or wanted sub f/1 images.

As for the next new body, I dare say the I will like the improvements and may even get one quite soon after the launch.

Re: 12-100 f4 Pro lens coming

I could cope with the M1 ii being a tad larger now I have replaced one of my i bodies with an M5 ii, which is smaller than I had appreciated, and very useful as a result.

However, what I'd also like are more practically useful and higher quality versions of some of the existing lenses that aren't any (or much) larger or faster. For example, a Pro level 17mm f1.8 with weather sealing and a working aperture ring as well as a pullback focus ring and a nice, small hood (like this one: http://cdn.audiencemedia.com/var/pho...od-removed.jpg )

When the E3 was launched the 12-60 SWD lens was introduced . This was f4 at the long end and the E3 was very noisy above iso800. Nevertheless most folk rated this lens as superb (even though the uncorrected RAW files showed distortions when used at 12mm).

Yes, I remember how pleased I was when I upgraded from a 14-54 mkI at f2.8-3.5 to one of these: the narrower aperture made no difference that I recall, and if you want shallower depth of field just extend the focal length a bit more.

Thinking about my own uses, I would certainly consider the new lens, but there is a mix of pros and cons:

It will be interesting to see how is new lens actually performs for typical travel photography applications and, as has been said, especially how big and heavy it is. I currently cover those exact focal lengths at f2.8 for my travel photography with the Panny 12-35 and 35-100, which together are within my size and weight sweet spot. I very much prefer a 12mm short end, and take nearly 40% of my travel and landscape shots at that (discounting my street shots).

With the 12-100 you'd always have the right lens on, and I've certainly missed shots with my pair of lenses when I hadn't.

Having the 12-35 allows you to take out a much more compact lens/body combination if you wish, leaving the 35-100 in the room safe.

If you want a properly fast lens then you can always add the tiny 17 f1.8 to the 12-100, thereby gaining a stop and a third over the f2.8s plus an even more compact single lens option. Of course that gets you back to 2 lenses again, but with different advantages and disadvantages!

Re: 12-100 f4 Pro lens coming

I still use the 4/3 12-60 on my EM1 as i find it a really useful range, yes it's a bit big and low light focus can be a pain - so it would be interesting to see how this performs
Never picked up the 12-40 because i know i would miss the 20mm.
