Re: I'm working on this site's sibling...

Frustratingly, we had another server event this morning. The only good news was that the glitch only lasted 5 minutes and the excessive server load was only half what it has been during such events in the recent past.

Sorry for any inconvenience.

Yes I did notice. I thought you might have forgotten to wind it up.....

No problem, it did not last long...

Re: I'm working on this site's sibling...

We have been making changes to the server configuration every day this week and the regular daily spike at around 8AM causing gateway time outs has been less regular and less intense.

This morning - no spike, no time outs

One day last week was similar, so I can't say for certain it's fixed, but with knowledge of our strategy, I am more optimistic than last week.

Fingers crossed! (again).

Re: I'm working on this site's sibling...

Alas, the gremlin returned just after my previous comment, although an hour and a half later than usual.

Nevertheless, the changes we're making do seem to be having positive effects, but there is more work to be done.

Think you spoke too soon

I just had Gateway Timeouts around 09:30 for about 10 minutes this morning. Sibling site had same issue.

Re: I'm working on this site's sibling...

Looks like the best solution will be to have an extra hour or more in bed every morning. Given the average age of the membership, myself included, this shouldn't be a problem

Should I tempt fate?

Server load graph is as flat as a mill pond this morning... (runs and hides...)

Have you got a ready supply of sandbags to hide behind?

Ha!

So far so good.

To be fair, the changes we made on Wednesday may well have required 48 hours to take effect, so yesterday's event may not have been avoidable. But I need to see several days of stability to declare success.

In laymen's terms, what do you think was causing the problem?
Was it some kind of external attack on the site or was it something to do with the configuration?

Re: I'm working on this site's sibling...

We're focusing on different ways of managing bots (like search engine spiders).

At the same time we've been making the server more efficient at dealing with high loads.

We can't rule out a malicious attack. Sadly there are one or two abusive individuals who have targeted us in the past (not members).

What a coincidence, that's exactly what I said to Mrs. Jax the other evening.

Her reply was " Would you like to try something you've never done before ? "

Putting on my biggest smile I said " Ohhhhh yesss please "

Great she said.......

Go and wash the dishes.

Haha - that's my job anyway - everything from fitting the dishwasher (I did the last two - the last time just last month! (integrated), to stacking it and, wait for it, washing up everything else that doesn't get washed in the dishwasher I also do the cooking.

Julia sings my praises - I can't argue!
