My understanding is that when displaying on screen, the pixels per inch setting is ignored. It just displays 1 pixel of image on 1 pixel of screen. Of course, there is the caveat that some software might be "clever" and decide it knows better, but generally for displaying in web pages I have found this to be the case.

Pixels per inch is critical for printing though. My first attempt at an inkjet print was from a scanned 35mm negative. I didn't change the setting from the 2400 pixels per inch of the scanner and sent off a huge file to the printer, to be rewarded with a sheet of A4 with a tiny 24 x 36mm print in the middle - probably at incredibly high quality!
