Throughout my film days & for most of my fathers as well, 35mm was the standard for amateur photographers, with pros using it too for many genres but switching to MF for quite a few of the shoots he arranged.
110, disc & APS did also come in for consumer use but didn't really touch more serious use.
When DSLRs came out they where smaller format than their target market were used to, yet usually worked with the same lenses. The crop made sense then, and with many sensor sizes still in use in serious cameras it still makes sense to have a common frame of reference.
