When you pop up the flash you are pressing the release button. If you press & hold that button & rotate the rear wheel, it will cycle through the different flash modes (the front wheel will change the flash compensation amount) & then you can change it off 'red eye reduction' to whatever flash mode you want. Standard flash (a single lightning symbol) is best for most situations (when direct flash is needed).

PS And the Super Control Panel is the other method.
I fiddle with violins (when I'm not fiddling with a camera).
