The answer is that you can nearlyy do it.

In the menu "cogs" D Disp/PC (manual page 88) there are two settings "Info Off" and "Backlit LCD".

If you set Info Off to its minimum of 10 seconds after 10 seconds of inactivity the display will switch off completely untill you use any of the buttons/dials.

If you set Backlit LCD to its minimum of 8 seconds after 8 seconds of inactivity the back light ( which gives the annoying glow) will similaly switch off.

You can have both set to their minima.
