Phil macro is not easy!

The 60mm f2.8 does not make it any easier.

For tripod shooting of non moving subjects MF is fine if a rather slow.

For handheld shooting I recomend the following

I susggest that you set back button focus to the AEL/AFL button see page 110 of the manual linked below
Also set the manual focus to peaking I would avoid magnify. Then get the AF to work pussing the AEL/AFL button and rock very slightly back and forth to get accurate focus the focus peaking wull help here.
