The 100-400mm is a bigger and heavier than the 100-300 for sure but feels a lot sturdier to me.
I've been carrying it hiking in the hills on an E-M1 and it still fits in a Napoleon style pocket of a waterproof/softshell. The extra reach over the 100-300 is a great benefit. It really does make a difference trying to get shots of wildlife etc. The image quality is superb I find and use the on board E-M1 IS.
The only downside is the extra size and weight makes for a bigger footprint for the wind to catch. You really do have to get a stable grip on the camera if it's a blowy day.

The equivalent of an 800mm lens that fits in your pocket? Can't be bad.
When you say you've been using the on-board IS of the E-m1 does that mean you turned off the IS of the lens first?
