I was going from an E-3 to the E-M1 so it was really a no-brainer.
One comparison observation that I can make is that I always thought that the E-3 was a touch too big in my small hands and I sometimes got a bit of cramp (I only used the grip on occasions). Now I find the E-M1 a touch small and the bit of my palm opposite my thumb needs somewhere to rest. Although the 'base' E-M1 is lovely and small, I find that the use of the grip solves the problem I encounter. The grip is definetly useful for the larger 4/3rds lenses anyway.
