The problem is that was almost a half and half split. Even Farage said he would fight on when he thought he was just going to lose it.

I could never understand why it only needed 50% + 1 for such an important decision. Many club constitutions require higher percentages if drastic changes are wanted. Just 2 quick examples:

Hitchin Camera Club
Any alterations to this constitution shall receive the assent of no less than two-thirds of the members present and voting at an AGM or EGM.

Chichester Camera Club:
Dissolution of the Club
8.1 A resolution to wind up the Club shall be put to an EGM convened for the purpose, and must be approved by a vote in favour of not less than 60% of those present.

So if 60% or 66% said they wanted to leave then you could have expected the losers to shut up, but the problem is that it was so close and now 2 years on we haven't left, but a lot of leavers have died and a lot of younger (more remainer) voters are now eligible.

Plus some of us are very wary about jumping off cliffs, especially when we don't know about possible submerged rocks below.
