I just checked mine for bif shooting and I too had it set to Mode 2. Just changed it to Mode 3. So lets see what happens. One possible downside might be more battery use I guess.

Unfortunately, I think you do lose most of it. In fact, in Photoshop if you select File > File Info it will show you what's left.
