Should be easy enough to check, take some shots at really slow shutter speeds with and without IS turned on. Hopefully the diffrence in the number of sharp shots will confirm whether or not IS is...

no idea - so I just put mine to my ear and operated the focus... and yes it makes the tiniest of noises, which I couldn't hear when the camera was in it's normal position at the eye!
