maybe I have mis-understood. I thought that Ex series were 4/3rs.

A Pentuim 3 is not cost effective to upgrade. You can get new laptop from about £300 and they will be 10-100x faster than the P3. You can get second hand ones on ebay....but you are taking a risk...

A SSD can give you a great performance boost. Anything that is disk intensive feels quicker.

However you need to be running a Mac or Windows 7 to get the best though. A complete re-install is...
