Re: Honestly, do you like autofocus?

Indeed, a great aid for ageing eyesight.

A short while ago I spent a day using scale focus, and more or less I was happy with all the results. All that's required is a lens with those weird...

Re: Honestly, do you like autofocus?

Who mentioned film? That's a totally different debate, but not here.

Re: v3 Firmware for mk2 - updates for mk2, m1x and lenses

Firmware refer to code used to configure an uncommitted logic array, eg the FPGA. Software refers to the stored machine code to be executed by a computer. That's why the word 'FIRMware' was coined....

Re: v3 Firmware for mk2 - updates for mk2, m1x and lenses

Yes I recollect it being said 50 lines of code. All depends on language being used, I think I could easily stall the computer with 10 lines of assembler.

Re: Honestly, do you like autofocus?

Are you not aware that there are digital RFs - Leica make several and I own one. Manual focus of course. Ok I can't take successful pictures of 'birds in flight', but why would I wish to do so.

Re: v3 Firmware for mk2 - updates for mk2, m1x and lenses

It is said that it is almost impossible to write 500 lines of computer code and to not introduce coding errors. Try it and see.

From the little I've read here it appears Olympus use the consumer...

Re: v3 Firmware for mk2 - updates for mk2, m1x and lenses

FPGAs were introduced to help developers prove the gate configuration for a given application, and once verified the gate array could be committed by blowing links, much like a PROM, and then churned...

Re: Honestly, do you like autofocus?

I particularly like the RF, no black out when the shutter operates, easier to focus in bad igniting, being able to see outside the frame (I've just acquired a 90mm Summicron and the breathing space...

Re: v3 Firmware for mk2 - updates for mk2, m1x and lenses

No Mirium Webster is incorrect. FPGAs are uncommitted logic arrays configured at power-up reset by code stored in PROM. FPGAs can be complex and include DSPs (good for maths processing). The code for...

Re: v3 Firmware for mk2 - updates for mk2, m1x and lenses

I associate firmware with FPGAs and software with the Neumann style computer. This is the common industry definition.

Uncommitted FPGAs are configured at power on reset using the firmware stored...

Tut tut, and I thought your occupation was in the software business.

Re: Honestly, do you like autofocus?

But still have the green light turned on?

(I've read quite a bit about cameras. I couldn't see the point of the MA, type 127, having no light meter, but I get it now. There's no distracting LEDs...

Re: v3 Firmware for mk2 - updates for mk2, m1x and lenses

If you were sitting on an Airbus Axxx and an announcement came over the tannoy that the software had been updated, just as quick, would you a) sit there and think nice things about the flight ahead,...

Honestly, do you like autofocus?

I find it hinders concentration at the critical moment when I should be in the zen state, that annoying green confirmatory light illuminating, and the camera beeping to confirm lock. I hate it...

Re: v3 Firmware for mk2 - updates for mk2, m1x and lenses

I have some experience of proving software (we had separate functions: those who specified, coders and verification all under separate directorates). With the best that money could afford, bugs did...

Re: v3 Firmware for mk2 - updates for mk2, m1x and lenses

I can sense enjoyment expressed here. Must be exciting, just like Christmas and the realisation of playing with your new toys you only dreamt of in the lead up to the big day.

Re: The 'M'

FWIW (very little in fact!) on MFT I almost always use aperture priority for the reason that dof is the clear (?!) differentiator for me. On my digital M it's M all the way, apart from a quick A to...

Re: Buttons..What do you do with them?

I've tried to get on with the 'dual dial on the top plate', but it doesn't work for me, ie having to look at the lcd or evf to determine settings, and then still none the wiser with regard to dof...

Re: Buttons..What do you do with them?

Most digital cameras are overly complex, but credit to Leica as they have demonstrated that there is a credible alternative with simplicity at the heart of the design objective, resulting in a...

Re: Buttons..What do you do with them?

Buttons are for shirts, jackets and overcoats. Camera design went bananas when software was introduced. Software is designed to make decisions and branch. Decisions lead to a plethora of buttons. The...
