Yes it's the hld-8g without the battery section. It obviously adds the bulk of the hand grip, with the benefit of a working button/dial, but only adds about 1cm to the height of the body. Weight...

I have the 5mkii with 12-40 and would say it's definitely usable without a grip.... But.... It's significantly better with the grip. It doesn't add much weight or bulk either (just grip not a battery...

The Dorr one comes with both options as standard, you can rotate the whole head or just the clamp. The benefit of the latter is that you don't need the tripod to be perfectly level, just the clamp...

That's the tripod and head i've just upgraded from (mines the aluminium version). They served me well for a couple of years and would have continued to do so..... Need and Want are too different...

Haha that's exactly why I didn't go for a Manfrotto!
I use a L bracket all the time so Arca Swiss for me.

I spent a couple of hours watching a pair fly up and down the river at the weekend. I was positioned near to the most obvious perch with 300mm in hand.... Obviously they never landed...

Clear sky and darkish moon phase... I'm off out for my first attempt at stars... If I don't appear with something in this thread in the next few days, just assume I failed miserably ;)
