Re: Communal Dragonfly, Butterfly and Insect photo thread

A real lift to see them when the sun shines. :)

One of the minor effects of a warming climate is the impact on insects. Until quite recently Red Admirals have migrated north and then back again to...

Re: Communal Dragonfly, Butterfly and Insect photo thread

It is a real pleasure to see the numbers of Small Tortoiseshells this year. They crashed a few years back and have been very low in numbers since. That will have been a combination of factors...

Re: I do need to find time to take more pictures so...

Well done, a sane move.

I admit I was 'helped' into agreeing a company voluntary redundancy scheme, I resisted at first because I was only in my early 50s, but I'm so glad - with hindsight - as...

Re: Communal flowers, trees, plants and fungi thread

A lovely sight and picture

It is a cornflower, a once common part of the cornfield alongside poppies and some much scarcer and lovely wild flowers. But as most UK fields are dosed with herbicides...

Re: Steady, you'll have someone's eye out with that!

That is fantastic. Exceptional sharpness and definition, and great behaviour.

And all taking place on the hairiest pair of Scotsman's testicles I've ever seen. *chr

Re: Fen Raft Spiders 2019

A fascinating spider and good to see the reintroductions are working. Shame it is so far to travel, but would be a good one to visit.

You might think about entering this in the Suffolk Wildlife...

Re: 4 the beady eyed bug-hunters

I am sorry to try and bring sanity to the BBC and other media armchair environmentalists but this is a complete nonsense as so much citizen surveying is. (I include the big butterfly count and others...

Re: Communal flowers, trees, plants and fungi thread

This is so lovely. I have one , just opening, so I am curious about what you used and how you achieved it. In my shots I have not gone that close, but it works really well.*chr

Re: Communal Dragonfly, Butterfly and Insect photo thread

I looked at various scale bugs, which was my instant thought and suggest you start with Parthenolecanium corni - which is also called European Fruit Lecanium

There are dozens of sources which look...

Re: Communal Dragonfly, Butterfly and Insect photo thread

Hi Mark

I am 99% that you have a Hairy Dragonfly as number one. It is first to emerge, so if it is May/June then you have a high chance of seeing that. Plus the Southern Migrant Hawker is a very...

Re: Butterflies with 12-200 and 40-150 (+1.4 tc) lenses

Hi Keith and Mrs K

Not sure if it helps but I put 14 other shots in a dropbox folder (https://www.dropbox.com/sh/7njst3vbs7eny9w/AADl_ekthWkTgYzRHV57FVKja?dl=0) so you can look at them as out of...

Re: Butterflies with 12-200 and 40-150 (+1.4 tc) lenses

I was in a small garden. it is small and designed to be wildlife friendly, so the bird was just fledged and hopping about calling to mum. I would have been about 6 feet or so from it. The only lens I...
