Re: Communal Bird Photography Thread

I spent a week in South Uist in June. Absolute birders paradise - hen harriers and short eared owls all over the place, corncrakes, red necked phalarope, arctic skuas, corn buntings, golden and...

Re: Galloway Pine Marten - at last!

Many thanks for your kind comments everyone.

Definitely John, but with the evenings now starting to draw in I might not get many more opportunities again in daylight, so I'm starting to think...

Re: Galloway Pine Marten - at last!

Thanks Dan. I didn't make it easy for myself with where I put the hide - shooting into the setting sun not ideal, but it has given her a nice halo!

Galloway Pine Marten - at last!

Back in March while I was out walking the dog on a forest road, about 2 or 3 miles from home, I found some pine marten droppings in the middle of the track - the first indication that I've seen that...

Re: Milky Way

Focus could well be slightly off - it's always a problem at night. I usually manually focus to the infinity sign on the focus ring and hope that with the wide angle lens there's enough dof to give...

Re: Milky Way

I've spent quite a bit of time trying to get good Milky Way photos with EM1.2 and never really been very satisfied, and I'm lucky enough to live somewhere with very low light pollution. This is fairly...

Re: Mountain Hares - Cairngorms

Thanks for the tip Dave. With any luck next week should see the Loch Garten ospreys arriving as well. Hopefully there'll still be some snow higher up too.

Re: Adder time again

You'd think so wouldn't you? 1C, snow flurries and a bitingly cold wind today, yet there they were again, hunkered down in the dead bracken catching some rays.
(Also saw my first wheatear of the...

Adder time again

It's springtime -the boys have emerged from hibernation within the past 10 days and are just hanging around waiting for the girls to put in an appearance. I've been watching this litttle colony for a...

Re: Mountain Hares - Cairngorms

Dave these are brilliant. I'm heading up to Aviemore for a few days next week and mountain hares are on my wishlist (along with ptarmigan, cresties and Black grouse). We used to have mountain hares...

Re: Communal Bird Photography Thread

It does seem a very blinkered approach. Crossbills certainly appear to like Norway spruce in particular, but most of our local commercial plantations (and there are a lot of them) are Sitka spruce...

Re: Communal Bird Photography Thread

Thanks Ron. They certainly can be quite hard to spot - I usually hear them well before I manage to see them. On this occasion it was the juvenile I saw first - its camo wasn't so good!

Re: Communal Bird Photography Thread

I keep an eye open for crossbills every time I take the dog for a walk up into the local forest, but this week was the first time I've seen any while I've actually had a camera with me. This female...

Re: Communal Bird Photography Thread

Thanks Ron. The diver was photographed literally from the car window. We also saw (but didn't get decent photos of) golden eagles, otters, and a St Kilda wren.

Re: Communal Bird Photography Thread

We went with Kilda Cruises from Leverburgh Mark. Great set of guys, fast boat (still took nearly three hours to get out and back) but definitely a bit lumpy. Four hours ashore, plenty of time to...

Re: Scotland. Advice please.

You can take wildlife watching boat trips from Oban or Clachan Seil to visit the Corryvreckan whirlpool - well worth it provided you're not prone to sea-sickness.
Skye is actually quite a long drive...

Re: Communal Bird Photography Thread

I'd be pleased if someone could ID this little bird for me. I was walking through an area of gorse, hawthorn and bracken (SW Scotland). There were lots of linnets, a few stonechats, whitethroat,...
