Lens dilemma (Sigma 10-20mm V Oly 11-22mm) & (Sigma 70-200mm V Oly 50-200mm)

I have a bit of a dilemma that Iíve been struggling with and thought I would see you guys had to say on the matter.

I am in a fortunate position of being able to add a couple of lenses to my growing collection (thanks to the tax man!). I currently have the Oly 14-45mm kit lens that came with my E500, and I have somewhat replaced this with the Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8 which I am very pleased with. In addition I also have the Sigma 55-200 zoom, Sigma 30mm f/1.4 and a Russian 8mm fisheye (via a converter ring).

I am looking for a wide angle zoom to supplement the Sigma 18-50mm, this will be predominantly used for landscapes and city vistas as the 18mm is not wide enough. I am torn between getting the Oly 11-22 f/2.8-3.5 (available now at the very tempting price of £370 thanks to another thread in the forum), or waiting a few weeks for the new Sigma 10-20mm f/4.0-5.6, price around £289. Both seem to have good reviews (albeit in other mounts in the case of the Sigma) however I am unsure of the impact of that extra 1mm at the wide end.

Secondly I am also looking for a replacement to my Sigma 55-200, again there are two options; either the Oly 55-200mm f/2.8-3.5 SWD for £770 or the Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8 (£699) (available in a short while). This will be used for my first foray into motorsport photography as well as a few airshows and the like I am planning on visiting this year. Having looked at, and tried the Oly I am very impressed, especially the SWD focusing, however I do not really like the extending trombone of the zoom. As I may well be using this with either the EC14 or EC20 the fixed f/2.8 of the Sigma may be beneficial. As a third option I do have the opportunity to buy the Sigma 135-400mm f/4.5-5.6 at an attractive price thus giving me a lens to use at the British Touring Car race next month while waiting for the Sigma 70-200mm to be available for a side by side comparison, so if there are any views on this I would welcome them also.

I would be most grateful to hear the views, opinions or just comments of the members of this forum or just to know if anyone else is having similar thoughts. If anyone needs any more details please let me know.

Jason.
E500 & more kit than I care to admit (I think I am addicted to gadgets!).

On the telephoto side, the Sigma is a beast compared with the Olympus version. Not sure what the weights are but there is a marked difference because the Sigma was designed for use on 35mm as opposed to 4/3 like the Olympus lens.

Amusingly I was using a Sigma 70-200 and my Dad an Oly 50-200 at a polo match in which the young princes were playing. I was approached by a steward "excuse me, sir, do you represent a press organisation" with the intention of putting me in the Pappo stand. Dad was left alone!

Hi,

I currently use the 18-50 sigma on my E510 along with the 70-300 Oly lens and the 11-22 lens in question.

The 11-22 is the best lens of the three, so bright and sharp. The construction is bullet proof and has a realy nice feal to use. At that price BUY IT!!.

All the best,

I use the two Oly kit lenses and also the 11-22mm.

The 14-42 and 40-150 are surprisingly good lenses, but I agree that the 11-22mm is in a completely different league!! Its heavier and larger than the kit lenses, but oh - so well made :-)

Guys

Many thanks for your replies, they are all very helpful. It seems that you are confirming what I was suspecting anyway, at least as far as the Olympus 11-22 is concerned. I probably knew it was the better lens (and a good bargain) but was looking for reassurance over the lost 1mm compared to the Sigma.

As for the telephoto, I still a little undecided, the Olympus does look excellent and is available now but again is the slight loss of speed over the Sigma significant (especially when used with a teleconverter).

Thanks again

Jason.

Jason,

In respect of the telephoto, you could always look at picking up a non SWD version of the 50-200mm Zuiko.

eBay has them for £400-480 quite often as do various retailers that carry pre-owned stock. You could try Ffordes Photographic, Digital Depot, Park Cameras etc. as they all carry items from time to time.

Just spotted this on eBay at £450 and less than 6 months old might be worth a look.

Jason,

I wouldnt get too excited about the 11-22 price at DigitalCameras ...

I ordered one last Friday and it appeared to be accepted.

Yesterday, Tuesday I got an email saying cancelled.

I suspect no stock.

Chris

At least the steward had some good news for you for a change!

The Sigma 70-200 is bigger and heavier than the Oly 50-200 because it has a constant open aperture of f/2.8 through the range, it really doesn't have anything to do with which format the lens was designed for. The 50-200 drops two thirds of a stop to f/3.5 by the time you reach 200mm. I personally think this is a good compromise on the part of Olympus. If Olympus designed a 70-200 f/2.8 for the E-System, it would be of a similar size and weight to the sigma one.

My apologies for my misunderstanding. In that case, I agree about the compromise: The 50-200 is much more manageable.

Re: Lens dilemma (Sigma 10-20mm V Oly 11-22mm) & (Sigma 70-200mm V Oly 50-200mm)

Just a quick line to thank all of you for your quick and knowledgeable replies, and to update you with my decisions so far.

After much deliberation I purchased the Sigma 135-400mm f/4.5-5.6 today as I had decided that I could live with the overlap with whichever 200mm lens I ended up with and the extra reach of 400mm is bound to be useful (at least thatís the excuse I told my wife!). Added to this I have been informed that this lens in being replaced with a newer version (which Iím sure will cost more) and the 4/3rds mount may take some time to arrive.

Although itís a big lump and will not fit into my camera bag I will only be using it on certain dedicated events like the British Touring Car Championships latter this month so I can always carry it separately for these.

I took a few test shots with this today and am very happy with the results, with a little practice I am sure it (and more importantly, I) will be up to the challenge of motorsport. I tried some shots of moving cars and although not quite as fast as the racetrack, some the faster roads seemed similar (certainly some drivers think they are on a race circuit).

As for the Olympus 50-200mm versus Sigma 70-200mm debate I think I may wait until they are both available and I can try them out for size and function etc. However given your comments above and my instincts I am leaning towards the Olympus offering for the smaller size and faster focusing, this may make it a little more useful and easier to carry when out and about.

Itís a similar story with Olympus 11-22mm versus Sigma 10-20mm, again I may well wait until I can compare them both. In this case however my preference is for the Sigma which has had numerous rave reviews and I have been very happy with my other Sigma EX lenses.

Jason.

I should have the Sigma 10 - 20 by the end of this week, I can take some sample shots with it if you'd like?

OOOHHHH!

I was looking at these through a contact on ebay (Chinaarts) and nearly dropped for one, so i would be interested in seeing your shots from it.

I know it can be a little soft around the edges on the APS-C sensors, but sharp in the middle, so the smaller image circle of the 4/3rd should give it the edge (pardon the pun!) over the APS-C version.

That's what I feel too. I am now waiting for the 70-200 as well as the 10-20 to hit my shores..(it may never will)

Hi all,

Not had chance to take any decent shots with the sigma 10 - 20 itself but got a few with the lens attached to my E510 using Susan's new 35 macro..
