E-510 card door broken

The card door on my daughter's E-510 will no longer stay shut, I guess that either a small catch has broken off or has simply become worn. I suspect that the cost of a visit to Portugal would be uneconomic in relation to the value of the camera, so I have been considering other options:-

1) Keep the door closed with a strip of sticky tape, which is what we are doing at the moment. Problems that i can forsee are the tape losing its stickiness at an inconvenient moment and the door popping open. Also, over time, a build up of sticky residue on the door and the adjacent area. Plus, this is not a very elegant solution.

2) Wedge a small piece of blue-tack between the door and the body. Once again, I can see this letting her down at a crucial moment as the blue-tack ages and a potential build up in residue of old material.

3) Use a small spot of superglue to stick the door shut. This would mean keeping the same card in all of the time and downloading pictures by the USB cable. Okay until she has a really big shoot that requires another card. If a small enough dab of glue is used it should be possible to open the door if needed by carefully running a modelling knife along the gap, but this does seem rather risky.

It wouldn't be such a problem if the camera didn't display a warning and stop fuctioning when the door is open.

What option would you choose and are there any alternative suggestions?

I am considering buying her an E-620, if I can find one at the right price; the 510 could then be used just for back-up. However, although the 620 has an extra 2mp I have a suspicion that the IQ is not quite as good as the 510. Could anyone comment?

Thank you. :)

Re: E-510 card door broken

If the fault is with the door rather than the body then Luton Cameras sell the doors for £10?
The images from the 510 were sharper than my 620 but it did give a (little) more dynamic range. It was a nice size and the battery grips is a nice addition/option (dirt cheap on Olympus UK at the moment).

Thanks Iain, 10 is quite reasonable, I wonder if they would fit it for a small extra charge - I very much doubt I'd be able to do it myself. I'll have to make enquiries.

Thanks also for your thoughts on the 510 vs 620. :)

Hi there John!

I have a spare door from an E-520 which I think is the same if it is any good to you - I'll have to check that the clips are intact, as it is a scrap camera bought for spares. Fitting is loosening off a few screws with a jewellers screwdriver and slipping the hinge pin out. I'll have a look later and post on here if it is a good one. Personally I have been using solution 1 on my E-420 for the last year and it is still on it's first piece of tape!

Cheers,

Ralph.

In my distant recollections, the 510 gave crisper images, but the 620 was nicer to use.

hi there John,

earlier this year i had the same problem (along with a broken batterydoor) with my E-420. I sent it to Olympus and they fixed the problem(s). It costed me a small € 95.00 and they cleaned the sensor also! I think for tht prize you should reconsider letting tht door fixed.

Re: E-510 card door broken

Same thing happened to mine John and I used option 1 for two years with the same bit of tape  Then I finally bought an EM1 to replace it.... but still have the E510 and use it occasionally and yes still with the same bit of tape!

I didn't realise there was a fix might try it myself when I get some time or the tape finally wears out :o

As for the E620 as a replacement I bought one a bit before the E510 card door broke as an upgrade but in the end I sold it on and kept the E510. It was a close call I must say as the E620 is better in many ways - dynamic range is better, viewfinder seemed a bit brighter, light up buttons, flip screen, and loads of other things I've forgotten that kept saying to me I should like it better, but in the end I just didn't, as it just felt a bit less solid in my hands and the clincher was that when it counted the E510 would always produce that little bit sharper image that I just liked better  The E510 can still give my EM1 a run for it's money in good light too.

I've had the same problem for a couple of years.

I simply use a small piece of black duck tape - you'd hardly notice it was there as it blends in so well and I've only had to replace it once.

Hope that helps.

Janet

Hi there John!

I have the door from my scrap E-520 - it has one catch broken (top one) but the other is intact and it did hold closed on the scrap camera. If you PM me your address I'll drop it in the post for you with a suitable small screw driver (they come free when I repair phones) free of charge (I also get free stamps every year)

Cheers,

Ralph.

Tape it, it makes the camera more 'pro' :D
